Absolutely sure:

The 78 Mustang II had them as an option also. Just look in the wallpaper section here.

So did Thunderbirds around then.

Or possibly a retractable glass roof panel that retracts like the Porsche Targa.
retracting up under the roofpanel (perhaps sliding would be a better way of saying it) was my first thought as well. It wouldnt have to slide up far, just 8 or 10 inches to allow for the air to flow out the back, and if you have one, over the rear spoiler for better downforce.
I always wondered why racecars didnt do this since they are not allowed side glass for safety reasons. Just leave a small opening at the bottom of the rear window to allow for pass through of the air and direct it over the rear spoiler for improved downforce.
This would seem to work for the mustang nicely since there seems to be enough room to allow the rear window to raise 6 or 8 inches below the roof panel. Of course it would be really cool to have it raise (or retract) completly (especially in conjunction with the cdc glassback roof panel).
Ford did have one on a sedan a long time ago. I can remember my dad having a 1950's something or other with the back window that would roll down. I used to lay out the back on the trunk waiting for my older sister to get out of school and he would always roll it up on me ... scared the pee out of me. of course being four that was pretty easy to do.

Or try the famous Targa top, removable hard top roof.
I do like the Hard top or Convertible but who is to say there isnt another option.

Apparently they did, but that window was practically vertical

I can't think of an easy way to accomplish something like this.

How about making those little 1/4 windows pop out? That would probably reduce the turbulent wind for the backseat passengers.

Both the T Tops and the Hatchback should come back.

And to all of you that say "NOOOO, don't bring back the hatchback." Then don't buy one. I'm not saying they should stop the sedan or vert.

Retractable glass and t tops nessessitate increase in weight, which the Mustang does not need. Besides t-tops and cowl hoods say GM... Mustang is better than that.
