Removing resonators

I have a 2013 GT with GT 500 axle backs installed and it sounds good a little less loud then I would like at times. I was talking to this guy at a muffler shop and he said if I remove the resonators (whatever they are?) it will really wake the car up? he said it will get louder? My question is is there any harm in doing this and also will it really make any difference?

Makes a good bit a difference and causes no harm whatsoever. Not sure it will be loud enough for you though, mine is pretty tame unless I am romping on it.

I have a 14 GT and I installed my GT500 axle backs and had then cut out the resonators the same day. I never had the experience of running them with the resonators installed. Usually resonators are there to tame the exhaust sound a little bit.

What they will do, is cut out the resonators and weld in a piece of straight pipe. OR, should you want to keep the resonators installed, you could get what's called "Over Axle Pipes" and essentially they bypass the resonators.

I like the sound of mine. It's mean. It pop and gurgles when I downshift. It's not overly loud to my ears except on a cold start. But I have had neighbours complain and apparently phone the cops and complain this week, so it must be loud enough to annoy them!

I tried the GT500's alone and found them too tame. I changed out the stock H pipe with a 3" X pipe and had 3" pipe welded in to eliminate the resonators, basically a custom 3" cat back for a quarter of the price. It has the perfect tone for my ears and is loud enough without being obnoxious.

When the neighbors get angry with you, that's when you know you have the sound just right. I have gotten plenty of dirty looks from my neighbors with the boss side pipes with no restrictor plates and roush axlebacks. That's how I knew it was just loud enough. Tell them they should not complain. That's the soundtrack of America they are hearing.

^^^ Merica! Haha!

Seriously though, I have GT500s and also had the resonators removed the same day the ABs were installed. I personally love it, it's just the right amount of noise when you want it, yet still tame when you're not putting your foot into it. Not that I actually have anything to compare to since I've never heard the GT500s with the resonators in but mine has plenty of pop and gurgle upon deceleration that I've heard is missing with the resonators still in.

I'd imagine it's a bit louder overall as well. And, as my exhaust has broken in a bit more it has gotten a little bit louder. It's a cheap and easy enough mod to try without most likely regretting!

That's the most amazing quote ever!!!!

PS I have the gt500 with open side pipes. Sounds great, but I find myself wanting louder. I still have resonators

My neighbors have said they here my car in the morning, too, but none of them said anything bad about it. They all work so they are up and getting ready for work when I crank it up at 5:30 Monday through Friday. And when I get home from a late gig with the band at 3:30 to 4:30 in the morning, the car is not on its loud idle then so it is tame enough not to disturb anyone.....I think.

I originally ran my GT500 AB with the factory resonators and then found some 2013 GT500 OTA pipes without resonators and installed them and my exhaust definitely got louder. It sounds just right for me. I would recommend doing it.

Aside from getting an off-road H or X pipe, its arguably the perfect sound combination you can get. I had the GT500 ABs first by themselves like many others, and while the quality of the sound was great, it was too tame. Once you remove the resonators, you remove the sound restriction getting to the axlebacks and it really wakes up the sound and tone. I have a video of mine somewhere I can post if you'd like.

For those of you that paid to have the resonators removed at a shop, what did you pay to have it done?

$50 in Boston. Prob shouldn't pay more than $40-50 if they are a good shop that is not trying to jerk you around

Uh, both?

But really, I would expect the cats to have a larger effect than the resonators.

Nice difference with resonators removed, from idle to WOT. Less than $100. Here's my vid on mine:
