Rear Window Cleaning Question

How do you clean the inside of the rear window? Mine has a kinda 'film' on it. I can not reach it well so I am thinking I will have to lower the rear seat-backs and lay on my back with my legs out the trunk. Any suggestions? What kind of glass cleaner and rags do you use for longest lasting best results?

Good question. I have a hard time reaching all the nooks and crannies of the glass too.

I use Chemical Guys glass cleaner and microfiber towels - always a good result.

Anyone with a good answer?

I have two of those, and they're a POS. Maybe I'm not smart enough to operate them but they leave a streaky mess, with a micro fiber looking 'pattern' in the mess.

I just put the back seat down and lay on it, Invisiglass and a quality paper towel and normally go over it twice.
I am 6'2" and can reach the very back, but with the seats up even down the headrests get in the way.

One of the worst rear windows to clean I've ever seen. Mine seems to get some kind of film on it too, kind of a hazy smoky look.

The haze is probably from all the new car materials gassing as they mature, especially when high heat is in the interior.

That's actually from the plastics (gases) and heat. It eventually goes away as the inside plastics age.

I use a window polish made by Mequires (spelling?). It is intended for water spot removal on glass, but works great in the inner glass as well, to remove haze, and leave the windows clean.

Window polish a good idea but how do u reach all of it. I have one of those window cleaning micro-fiber tools with a handle from Walgreen's but it streaks everything it touches. I tried covering it with a new micro-fiber towel but the towel keeps dragging off of it. Pain in the butt!!

I'm an overweight, 54 year old man. I groan and grunt alot, but am able to get to the corners to apply the polish, then buff it off. Good thing I only have to do that back window once or twice a year.

Not a pretty picture watching me do this; I do it first thing in the morning when it's the coolest as well. I'd most likely sweat to death here in Florida if I waited to do it any later than the morning.

I was figuring it was some kind of evaporation from the seats... When my car arrived a couple months ago, I cleaned some haze off the rear window. However, a couple days later I was surprised to see two hazy spots again- right over the rear head rests. Cleaned em again, and a week later they were back again (but not quite as bad).

I think I finally got em though... I always use Invisible Glass spray on my windows- seems to work pretty well. To avoid the lint and pattern from the fiber cloth, I use an old bath towel.

Well I am considering having the rear window dark tinted, maybe I won't have to go through the misery of cleaning it so often. Then again I could just pay the 10 year old next door to me to clean it lol.

My dad once showed me a way to clean windows that is truely old skool. You just use any glass cleaner, but the trick to not having streaks or leftover resdiue is to use newspaper as your rag/cloth to wipe off the cleaner. I know it sounds weird but it somehow works without leaving any streaks, give it a try. Wanna talk about difficulty cleaning a back window, I remember trying to clean the rear window on my 94' GT with the Mach 460 sound system. The speaker grills were like 1/4" from the glass so it was impossible to get the lowest 1/4 of the window clean without removing the rear deck lid. Many times I shredded my hands on those cheese grinder speaker grills, trying to clean that window LOL

I drop the rear seatbacks. I use a microfiber cloth and Savogran DirteX spray to clean the glass. Wipe it on, dry it off. No streaks or smears. DirteX is not at all pricey at $13 for a one-gallon refill jug. I buy it from my local paint & glass store. I use DirteX to clean stove tops, home windows, mirrors and etc.. I no longer buy Windex or other glass cleaners for anything.

Bill, stop smoking in your GT and the glass won't get that nasty brown film on them.

If you want, I'll bring you some DirteX spray cleaner to try when I get my baby's stripes installed. Let me know. DirteX is the bee's knees for cleaning glass. You may want to pick up one of these as well, but you don't have to be a "Stoner" to use one:

lol. I don't smoke in my house or my cars, only outdoors. I have a couple of those reach tools and use them all them time, but keeping them clean is another issue. I am going to get some Dirtex today but thanks for the offer. See u soon when you come up for your stripping.

Yes I remember using newspaper as well. It did seem to work well so I will try it again. I seem to remember having stopped using it because the ink/print got on the headliner and pillar posts material if you weren't really careful. Those were plastic or vinyl in the old days.

I have a cleaning tool that has a bonnet on it. I machine wash them (after use) and dry them. Sometimes, I lay a clean microfiber cloth over the bonnet (wetted with DirteX) to clean windows. Works real well.

I talked to John on Monday and he's sending me a color chart. I should get it today. Once I choose and he ensures he has it in-hand, I'll be scheduled for installation. John seems as anxious to get my striping done as I am. Guess I've been somewhat persistent in calling him about color choices and so forth.

Most printers use soy ink nowadays to save money. Soy ink has soy oil, waxes, resins and other crap in it, which rubs off quite easily. By the time a guy finishes thumbing through a Post-Dispatch, he needs to wash the black off his hands.

I looked at Dirtex cleaner today and called the company. There is ammonia in it, they recommend against using it on plastic or vinyl and window tint. I didn't buy any yet...still looking.
