Rear differential resevoir
After reading on the Boss forums several cases of blowing rear diff fluid when things get very hot, I'm working on rigging up a reservoir. There are a couple that can be purchased, but I'm going to see what I can rig up at a lower budget. I'll post pics as I collect parts and do the install over the next week or two!
Considering a small breather filter for the other end of the hose, although if I can find a good reservoir that I can bolt up I'll do that.
Anyone do this install as a DIY project? Interested to see some setups

Have thought about it, probably will get some temp tabs and see what temps it's getting up to. I have the track package with the Boss 302 aluminum finned rear cover, so it should have decent head dissipation

How the hell are they blowing diff fluid? What's the temp rating of diff fluid anyways? I believe they must be using the wrong fluid or something. Then again, the Boss wasn't built for a continuous 5 hr road race. If you get the rear end hot enough to boil and blow fluid out of the rear end, the fluid is pretty much done and quite possibly the rear end too. I would look for a much better racing type of fluid. Maybe consult with a few lubricant companies and try and find the correct fluid to race with. Bob the oil guy might have a few recommendations also.

I had good luck in my last car with Redline fluids in the tranny and rear diff, but definitely need to look at fluid options

Yeah the gear oil and even more synthetic fluid shouldn't expand that much. Thinking its just a fluid issue myself. Would hate to see someone do some senseless mod that could be avoided by a fluid change.

From what I understand apparently there is a small vent hole on top of the pumpkin or something and when they track them or drive them vigorously it sloshes around and seeps out. That's all. They are not boiling gear oil.
But then again I don't know what I'm talking about most of the time.
Not to say a differential cooler wouldn't help it on a track. Most R owners say that that car must have a cooler for any serious tracking it was supposedly built for.
That is all.

When I switched the differential cover from the stock unit to that of the Ford Racing cover (it has a fill and drain plug), the dealer I bought it from also sold two quarts of Royal Purple and the Ford friction modifier. When I questioned them about the owners manual stating I install 5.25 pints, and that they should have included another quart of gear oil (of which I would have added just at half of it), they said with the new cover, it's full with just 4 pints (the two quarts they sold as a refill/change kit). They were correct. Even with the back end up on jack stands so I could get myself under the car to remove the old cover and install this one, then pump the new fluid into the upper plug hole, the second quart took it to the fill limit; I could see the fluid on the bent tie wrap (nice tip I got from this site).
Maybe its being overfilled?

Why fab something up when you could just buy something. http://shop.bobsautosports.com/Musta...-reservoir.htm

$25 vs $130
I know, "whats $100" but there are a number of things I'm trying to do right off the bat which is tough after just spending quite a bit on a downpayment

This is true, it does seem though that a ton of Boss guys are using it, and they like to DIY if they can, at least at BMO. It may be that doing it yourself might not yield the best result. I was wondering though that you're doing this prior to having any issue it seems unless you have stated in another thread that you had issues. I would just wait then till it happens, may never need it.

I have not had the issue yet but I figure I would rather mitigate a potential problem rather than deal with it part way thru a track day or something.

And fair point about BMO having a number of DIY's, kind if surprised this isn't one of them. Maybe some DIY's were done and did t function well. If that's the case I will find out soon!
