Problem with tire spin into 2nd gear
Problem with tire spin into 2nd gear
So I feel like I've mastered how to maximize the power in these high rpm engines when at the track, but the irony is that now I can't seem to get into second gear without wheel spin. I only have the 6 cylinder, but even with it only being the 6, I have to actually to take my foot off the gas because it just won't hook.
I do have the street all seasons still. And I do powershift. How do some of you more seasoned riders deal with tire spin? I almost feel as though the only way I can (without slicks of course) is to actually sacrifice some performance and ease a bit into second instead of maximizing my shift into second with full throttle?

i dont see anything wrong with it chirping them in 2nd unless your just spinning all through 2nd. getting off the line and getting the tires to hook up in 1st seems like that'd be the challenge to me. even my Focus can chirp them into 2nd going WOT.. w/ TC turned on.
I'd be ok with a chirp
...but this isn't a chirp. This is full out spinning where I'm going sideways and have to let off the gas before I totally spin out. And my tires are in fine shape so I know it's not an issue with them other than being street tires.

Yeah.. performance tires will fix all that.
Right now I'm running my friend's stock GT wheels and tires. I sometimes accidentally spin when just taking off. I'm coming from the Performance Package P-Zero tires so the traction difference is pretty glaring.
I would almost go as far as to say that the stock GT tires are dangerous on a car that powerful, since I already feel that they are already kinda suspect on my 3.31 V6.

I have the same issue all the way through 3rd on the all season Pirelli's. Not so much with my Nitto's, but those are off the car now for winter. I just feather the throttle and have some fun with it. Tires should fix that, to really improve it get yourself some upgraded suspension with some lca's.
I have the perfect solution! Trade your V6 for Will3212's 5.0! You will both be happy!

I think tires are probably the ultimate answer as suggested. Until then throttle modulation will be my work around as also suggested.
It is funny though when people talk about not feeling the power in these engines. Once you understand how to rev them, they feel monsterous. A trick I did too was to actually observe where my rpm's were at their peak during acceleration tests. So now I know which gear to use based on my speed. For my car with the 3.31's, below 35 mph I use first gear, below 55 mph is 2nd gear, and below 100 mph is 3rd gear. Using the wrong gear will make the car feel slow. For instance, you can drive casually in 4th gear at 40 mph..so you'd think that downshifting to 3rd would get you that "kick"...but it won't...it's the wrong gear. You'd need 2nd gear at that speed. People need to really observe the rpm ranges and study them to understand where to shift for maximum power.
I had to do the same thing.....kept feeling like it was not quick as it should be on downshifts. Started actually looking at the dash again and now it is a blast. That was the first week of ownership....lol

Which means lots of fun with spinning.

But yeah, the first time I mastered it with this car and went into that full spin...I was like REALLY??? Did that just happen with my 6???

I guess I gotta try that and get good with it. I've been babying it a lot. When I get on it I'm still granny shifting forge next gear (not power shifting)
What's With only 1/3 clutch tho?! Couldn't that be not engaging it enough and risk not being able to shift?

Be very careful though. I wouldn't recommend just going out and powershifting because it can be dangerous since you can spin out very easily. Especially with TC off. But don't be fooled into thinking TC will save your butt because it doesn't always necessarily kick in. It's better to slowly practice by doing a light powershift getting your tires to just chirp and work your way up until a full powershift until you're comfortable with it. To be honest, even in my case, it's not full on powershifting because I do slightly disengage the throttle since these street tires stink for truly hooking
.
For the clutch, technically you can shift without using the clutch at all but it's much harder with quick shifting...but in terms of how far to push it in for quick shifting, it's all about feel. You'll learn basically where the clutch disengages. That's the key to a quick shift (when you don't get gear lockout with these transmissions that is...lol).
