Performance White - Orange Splotches In Paint
Performance White - Orange Splotches In Paint
Hi,
I know this belongs in the car care section, but I don't think many people regularly check there. I did a search in this section and the car care section, but it did not return any results.
On my PW, after a thorough clean job today, I noticed several orange splotches on my rear quarter panels. They are not big, but there are a few.
The splotches are definitely IN the paint, not on it. I knew about the orange peel on some black cars, but is this the same? Can I get them out with a clay bar kit?
Thank you

Just a note - 'orange peel' on a black car isn't referring to the color. With black cars, you literally end up with a texture like the outside of an orange if it's not properly prepped before hand. In this case, sounds like you either have pain chips or some bad paint quality control. Hit up Ford if the clay bar doesn't fix it.
Sounds to me like rail dust. Long story short, it's a type of surface rusting from metallic dust, but it can be removed by using a clay bar. While it may seem to be "in" the paint, some vigorous use of clay will get it off of there. Light colored cars are notorious for seeing this, so you're not the first. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post them.
I agree with Overboost, sounds like rail dust.
Paint color doesn't matter. My grabber blue has orange peel. Orange peel from the factory is just ridiculous, IMO. My friend's Hyundai has perfect paint. Get this fixed Ford!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will give the clay bar a try.
And thanks for correcting and improving my knowledge of the orange peel effect.

In two-stage paint systems, orange peel occurs when spraying the clear coat due to the sprayer settings/technique. Almost all factory cars exhibit orange peel. It can be worked out with wet sanding followed by a rubbing compound. Result is a smooth finish. I'd leave this to a reputable body shop or detailer. It's not difficult to sand through the clear coat which will leave your base coat vulnerable to the elements (UV, moisure, etc). Sanding on raised contours or edges will cut through the clear coat in short time ==>
