Ordered a Mustang Using the Costco Auto Program

First of all, major thanks to everyone who has contributed anything to this board. It really influenced the way I ordered my new car.

So the deal I got was $100 over invoice using the Costco auto program. Not the deal of the century, but after grinding on the previous dealer for over 5 hours last Saturday I was happy to take it. The last dealer wouldn't show me the invoice, wanted to double charge me the FDAF assessment, low-balled me on my trade, and tried to hide the sales price of the Mustang with their “four squares” sales form I had to sign and keep initialing. And all that on top of not budging off MSRP. Yep, after 5 hours they got all frowny-faced when I finally spoke to the manager and said I wouldn't pay MSRP. He says “You don’t work for free. Why do you expect us to?”

So anyway, I now have a 2012 Performance White GT Premium with Stone interior, 6-speed manual, Brembo package, and 3.55 gears ordered. Can’t wait!

Congrats! $100 over invoice isn't bad at all considering the fact these cars are selling really well and it's a premium with brembos. Either way you'll love the car, well worth the wait and frustration of dealing with dealers.

Great to hear!

I tried the Costco program but the Bullitt didn't qualify cause of SE. But it did help me with the dealer's crappy attempt to ADM.

I like the Costco program because the dealership supposedly has to show you the Costco price as will as MSRP and Invoice in writing. I used Costco to buy a 2011 Toyota Sienna LE and got a good deal. For the 2012 Mustang, I got a tentative price from the official Costco dealer, then I went to the dealership that is on a county island, and they matched the price, plus they have less tax. I really do not even like going into a dealership until I look into the Costco program plus do my research about good prices in the area. The xplan sticky led me to get an x plan pin after doing that whole Costco thing. I really do not know much about it, but the salesman said it would work for the car I am ordering.

By the way, does anyone know the xplan price for a 2012 GT premium with HID, Reverse sensing, security package, and 3.55 rear-axle in Lava red with Lava red seats?

Do you know what the invoice with holdback is on this car?

X-plan is invoice with holdback cost minus .4% plus admin fee.

Sorry, I do not. I have seen invoice here on some of the forums once, but I really do not know what holdback is, and I do not know what if any discounts the options get.

I used the Costco program as well, I contacted Costco and got hooked up with a dealer. Then after shopping the one dealer I went to another that had the color I wanted and they said they would honor the Costco pricing the other dealer was giving me but weren't actually part of the Costco program. In the end I got under invoice and didn't get bent over on my trade in. Definitely worth looking into even if you don't use it, its an awesome bargaining tactic. Enjoy your new ride sounds sweet!

Edmunds.com has the 2012 invoice pricing that includes the holdback. You can go on there and build and price the car with your selected options and get the invoice prise to use to figure the x-plan off of.

$35,510 = MSRP
$33,247 = Factory Invoice Total
$33,389 = X-plan

I got these figures directly out of the Ford order banks, so they are 100% correct and from Ford.

How come you guys are ordering the 3.55 instead of the 3.73 gears?

I do not really anticipate there being all that much difference from the RPM numbers I have seen at different speeds in each gear. I did want to get a balance between extra power, fuel economy, and a slightly more usable 1st gear. I will use this for traveling and driving around town more than racing. I also can't rule out a supercharger some time in the future, and would like the 3.55s with one.

Does anyone know 1/4 mile time differences between stock GTs with 3.55 and 3.73 gears?

Also, thanks for the xplan info

OMG man. I couldn't deal with that stuff for more than an hour. I have dealt with that type of sales people in the past and swore never again. That is why I went 100% online for the last two car purchases. Just emailed a bunch of dealers and when I felt comfortable I found the best deal and least shady dealer, I went in. When I bought the mustang I was only in the dealership for a few hours just signing papers.

I think this new 6-speed has a fairly low first gear. That makes me believe that my car will actually be quicker with me driving it with the 3.55 gears. I think I’ll be able to launch it better and more consistently with a taller gear. And now that I’m in my 40s, I don’t race everything that moves so I anticipate have to shift a little less with the 3.55.

I also used the Costco service to buy my 2011 Shelby gt500. Got it for 5k below sticker. The dealer didn't have any in stock so I told him what options I wanted and they got it from a another dealer. Was in and out of the dealer in less than a hour. Considering most dealers in my area had adm's of 5k or more I think I did ok.

When you sign up on the costco web site it just sends your info to the costco plan dealer in your area, which in my case was McCoy mills ford in Fullerton ca

When you use the Costco program are you still charged the added dealer profit processing/admin/paper fee which is usually $500-$600?

I will be charged a "documentation fee" of $170. I had the dealer print out sample paperwork that showed me all the fees involved to make sure they weren't padding their profit because of the Costo deal. No doubt this price varies from dealer to dealer and might even be negotiable.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that I didn't have to put down any kind of deposit to order the car, but this probably varies also.

Oh, and one other interesting (to me) note is that when I got my salesperson's business card it said "fleet sales" on it. It really was a different buying experience than I was accustomed to. It's like the fleet guys just want you in and out so they can add you to their monthly numbers. She told me to shop my trade around before letting the dealer make me an offer and even told me to avoid the extended warranty the dealership "pushes" and to only go for the Ford factory extended warranty if I was interested in one.
