Never had one in my Mustangs, both the 2006 and 2011. I go about 5-9 over around town here in Charlotte. I feel the pain of the guy that got one for 6 over, that's harsh. I figure I am safe from tickets less than 10 over the posted limit, haven't received one yet...

My only ticket was in college, in a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage with 105hp. On I-75 north of Orlando, right before the I-10 interchange, got pulled over. Cop said I was doing 85, 15 over. I was really doing 90+, idiot college kid. So I said "Sure, I was going 85." $180, and not one since.

I don't do "tickets" i do radar detectors! If you want a great window mount i recommend the Escort Max (~$500) I am probably going to get the installed one 9500CI ($1500). But both are well worth it. I have been saved many times over with tickets.
Disclaimer: I am in no way connected with Escort, I just love their product. But if i broke any rules by putting a brand on here let me know and ill edit!

Not effective at all. But around here, laser is almost non-existent.

Don't they have the laser jammers?

Couldn't be more true. I used to be a district trainer for a large company that sold car electronics and accessories. The reps would come in and even they admitted that if you see a laser reading you should just pull over and pull out your license and registration. It works but doesn't give you time to decelerate.

Laser jammers can be added, but are not generally included. You also have to check whether they're legal in your state.

Correct. *IF* you even pick up the laser, it's too late.

First time I drove the Shelby to work after stripe install, my local county boy found them REALLY sharp......

Took a side road around my normal route because an irrigation sprinkler was running over the road. So when I got back onto the highway I was in 3rd doing 85+ (which is not hard to do).... I was letting the motor wind down, well need less to say the vehicle behind me was a cop. Was hard to tell with it being dark out. So berries and cherries were a blazing.

:Officer: "What's you hurry?"
:Me: "I'm on my way to work."
:Officer: "License and registration please."

Officer walks away, but comes back a few short seconds.

:Officer: "I noticed your back window is kind of dark, please roll up your window a bit."

I roll up the window a bit.

:Officer: "Let me check that out"....."14%"...."Wisconsin law is 50%, that will have to come off"
:Me: "Yes officer."

Officer goes back to his SUV......when he comes back he has a grin on his face. I am thinking.....now what??

:Officer: "Where do you live?"
:Me: Just down the road.....my husband is...."
:Officer: "I went to Canada fishing with your husband a few years ago."

He hands me my license and registration....."Have a nice day."
Then he hands me one of his cards and says "Tell you husband I say hi."

:Me: "Thank YOU Officer, and I will!" with a big smile on my face......

As I start the car I lean out the window.

:Me: "Hey!"

He turns around....

:Me: I'll tell my husband you said "Nice Car!"
:Officer: "Tell him you were trying to out run me!"

lol we both laughed!

I got lucky.......... When I got home I told my husband....those stripe need to come off the car! lol

In Denton?

Pretty much every Texas DPS cruiser uses either a laser or LIDAR unit these days, as do the vast majority of large cities and suburbs. Maybe to the north and west of you there aren't many lasers, but don't head south or too far east. I can tell you for certain that from McKinney on south you'll be running into LIDAR equipped cops almost exclusively.

The other problem with having a radar detector is if you do happen to get pulled over for any reason that radar detector is a big red flag that you have the intent to break the law. It's an open invitation to tickets and harassment. You'll never be able to talk your way out of a ticket with a radar detector sitting right there.

I've had the car for just a hair over a year and no tickets as of yet. I guess driving it less than 100 miles a week helps. Got my last ticket in 2005 in my Evolution...70 in a 35. It was an awesome winding road with no hidden driveways, and I had a fresh set of RA1s on the car, so I had no choice.

With regards to radar detectors, never had one...never will. Aside from the fact that if pulled over it basically negates any argument you can put in front of the cop, they are really only good for letting you know you're getting pulled over (in LIDAR country). My brother in law is CHP and laughs whenever someone brings the subject up.

Yup. I'm actually farther south now, around Carrollton/Lewisville, and I still never run into any laser. I think maybe it's too inconvenient to use it, so most of them just stick with radar.

The only time I see it is in Denton...the k9 unit will set up over a hill and stand on the side if the road aiming, and he'll have a line of patrol cars ready to get the cars that he calls out to them.

Don't drive through Plano. They are LIDAR exclusively, and they run speed traps all of the time.

I'll add my two cents.

I got nabbed about two month after I bought it. I usually don't speed unless I am cognizant that I am looking to speed, but on this date I was running late to a family get together and had my 8 year old daughter with me. My mind was just not there. Blam... 91 on a 70 on I-75 just north of Miami. Florida State trooper on a new Challenger.

There was nothing I could say and I felt terrible since he gave the look of disgust because of my daughter. Everything was air tight so I was going to pay the $250 ticket when I thought I give one of the local lawyers a chance.

Two months later, the lawyer go it thrown off for only $60. I don't know if he was Johnny Cochran's protégé or just plain lucky, but he sure did it.

Next week I got a Escort 9500Xi something or another. I haven't received a ticket since. Down here in South Florida, the PoPo mainly uses the Ka band.

Sal

Not sure if anyone mentioned this in this thread but if you hold the info and setup buttons (the rightmost two) left of the steering wheel when you start the car it enters engineering mode. Then you can press info a bunch until you get to the MPH readout. I always do this when I know I'm going to be on the highway for a while.

Yep. But you have to enter engineering mode. It takes a few extra seconds but you can see some cool info like engine temps, a digital tach, ect. Disclaimer, this works on my '12, not sure about earlier models

I didn't know they still did that. They've been doing that since at least the sn95 models. It's not something I leave on all the time, but I always though it was a cool Easter egg.

There is a thread on this a while back. I made a video on it back then too.

I love the law! Especially with value!
Sounds like a dirty cop, and we all loose when we have dirty cops.

I was a state LEO for over 31 years ..... I do so hate a dirty cop.
