Oil life monitor?

On my 13 GT when in storage for the winter how does it effect the oil life monitor? Will it still count down a few % just from sitting? And if you disconnect the battery does it hold memory or reset to zero? ... Thanks

That's a good question... Never paid attention to it.
Always changed the oil before going to storage and always changed it after coming out of storage.

Yes it will still count down if the battery is disconnected. I change my oil before putting it away and then take it for a long drive when I take it out in the Spring. There's no need to change your oil again.

It does go down when sitting. My Mothers 2010 Taurus said 'Change oil' at 1 year and 3 week with 970 miles. I changed the oil on my v6 2011 Mustang yesterday. The oil life was at 23% at 1,250 miles and 9 months on the time.

I 'think' the ''change oil'' will come on in around 1 year with 0 miles.

This is silly - why change unused oil?

Really???
There are additives and detergents in the oil that will break down over a period of time regardless of high temp or not.
Personally it's also peace of mind.
Not to mention the cost of and oil change out weighs the cost of an engine over time.
It's the life blood of the motor.

Lol yea it's silly. You think you're going to lose an engine because you didn't change oil after just changing the oil? Come on use your head.

He said "before going into storage" and "after coming out of storage." We don't know how long it's in storage. If it's close to a year it seems like it would be a good idea.

Hey we all think differently... With the purchase of my 13GT and the $20,000 in mods I've done I'm sure not going to worry about spending money on some oil changes.

I think it's safe to assume it's not a year.

I just looked at mine today on my 14 GT. It was at 23% and I have about 6,000 miles on this oil change which I did last March. The car has been sitting for a little over a month in my garage and the last time I had looked at it before I put it up, I'm pretty sure it was in the low 40's on the OLM so just sitting around it seems made it go lower.

I would just file it under it's his car and he can do what he wants to with it. Not worth an argument, at least not to me. Fortunately for me I live in the south so I get to drive my Mustang year round. I never use the oil life monitor. I just change my oil on a regular interval of 6500 miles.

Sitting for a few months in an engine that hasn't been started? Bet Blackstone would disagree. Bet oil on a store shelf is often older than a few months in his garage.

I don't use oil nanny's, but follow the owner's manual - x amount of miles or once/year. I change oil in Nov on Bullitt just before 5 month storage. Don't want blow by and other impurities sitting in the crankcase all winter. Drive it April thru Nov. My 25000 mi Blackstone report last Nov taken from oil with 5681 miles on it at the end of the driving season?

<This first sample from your Bullitt looks great. No fuel or coolant was present, and wear metals are appropriately low. ........ The viscosity is in the 5W/20range, and low insolubles and silicon show good oil and air filtration. Nice engine at 26,047 miles.>

My '83 F150 is just used as a ranch truck now with barely a thousand miles each year, so it falls under the "once/year" plan too. How many miles? 254k and still pullin!

My sister has a 1995 Corvette and she puts it in storage every winter for several months she would change her oil before putting it away and also when it came out in the spring until I sent her storage oil change oil out for an oil analysis and it came back like new that is everything about the oil was just fine and Blackstone Labs told me I'm really wasting my money dumping the oil out. So it makes no sense to me with my Mustang I change it right before I put it away then run it for a few miles to get the new oil through the motor then put it away and it's just fine for spring. But hay if you feel better changing both before storage and once out to each his own.

I personally don't worry about it. Mine only sits for four months at the most during the winter and i'm sure the engine will outlast the rest of the car. My 1998 chevy truck that I bought new only goes about 2-3,000 miles a year these days and has been like this since 2006 and I change the oil once a year and it still runs like new with 127,600 miles on it.

My fiancee's grandmother has a 1997 chevy truck that her husband bought new that only has 23,000 miles on it and this truck still runs like new and the oil only gets changed about every 2-3 years. It only goes between 500-1,000 miles a year and mostly just sits in the garage. This has been it's use since her grandfather died in 2001.

Back in the day I used to obsess about what oil I used and how often to change it but now I just don't worry about it as much. To each his own though.

Yeah, if you can go 10,000 miles of driving on an oil change, I'm pretty sure you can leave oil sitting for four months.
