Nothing prepared me for what happened...

as I pulled out of the dealer.

Background: I've never had a car over 250hp. I sold my F150 at the end of April and have been driving my 200,000+ mile '92 Explorer on 34" tires and stock gears since.

I'm a bit disappointed that no one warned me. As I pulled out of the dealer (zero traffic in my direction) yesterday my feet and hands took over. There was no controlling them. Before I knew it I had chirped it into fourth gear and was settling in at the speed limit.

This car is beyond incredible to me. Not only is it my first brand new car, it's my first Mustang. I am absolutely amazed.

Haven't even touched the radio, yet!!

Wait... you have 34's on an Explorer?

Keep that AdvanceTrac on while you get a handle on all that power.

Its interesting how the new 5.0 is making a connection with unconventional muscle car patrons, people who drive trucks, BMW's, Lexus, even some hardcore Chevy and Dodge guys are coming to the party...This car has big potential, and you don't have to add a supercharger to experience it.

Yes, it's a '92 EB converted to a manual transmission sitting on 34x10.50 Super Swamper LTBs. I pull out Wranglers on almost every trail ride.

The traction control is fully engaged while I learn this car. I'm paying way too much to risk losing control.

I've already settled into taking it easy, though. I know the power is there and that's what matters to me. Already had a Camaro try to race me on the Interstate this morning. Does driving a Mustang automatically make me a street racer or something?

Absolutely. I planned for my next vehicle to be a F250, but I couldn't get over this Mustang. Last night my 5yo called my mom to thank her for something. She asked what he thought about Daddy's new car.

"It's really fast, Grandmom."
Crap.

I swear I was even being good when he was in it!

Hahah! Awesome. I'm so glad you didn't say that you splatted it into a guard rail.

Congrats on your new hotrod...take care of her!!

My Explorer is for pushing limits with no regrets. I've tested the power of this car a bit and like what it has on tap. I'm beyond satisfied and plan to generally take it easy until I get a better feel for the shifter and handling.

He's five. If you tell him the car is really fast, that's exactly what he'll tell everyone else. And he will tell everyone else. Every human being he comes into contact with will know this. I know, because that's exactly how I was at that age.

As for the car, yes it is fast.

No, but other people will see you as one, unfortunately. The police will nail you before they nail the SUV or station wagon going faster than you. Camaros, tuners, and other "fast cars" are going to act squirrelly on you. But so long as you keep a clear head and don't get sucked into their stupidity, you should be fine.

An autocross course will do wonders to let you see the handling capability, while the drag strip will let you feel the acceleration forces.

Have fun!

I'm not a street racer. Maybe in high school, but that was quite unfortunately a decade ago. (wow, that sucks!)

I'll be hitting autocross events and the drag strip when I really want to play, but neither until I'm confident I can harness the fury.

Updated! Thanks again for that rebate info- with the rebates I was able to finance over $4k under MSRP, which makes me a lot more comfortable with this whole thing.

Having the traction control on doesn't mean you can't still lose control so don't get too over-confident about that.

To the people comment on 34's on the Explorer. When it comes to SUV's/Trucks - the size designation is in reference to the tire from top to ground, not the rim, as is most common when speaking of cars.

Welcome to the addiction.

Prior to the wife getting her Porsche turbo I thought I was a good driver.

It was scary fast and it took me a long time to become comfortable w/ that much power and control.

Now that I have my own powerful car I am again learning, with this machine.
