I'd prefer to not make the cop nervous at all. I turn off the engine and radio, roll down all windows, turn on my dome light, and have my hands in plain site, and then politely ask for permission to open the glovebox when they ask for info.

This is the best way to get on a cop's good side. One of my bro's works for DPD and agrees with all of this!

edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention: Voluntarilly telling them you have a pistol on you without them finding out the hard way helps too!
I agree with everything you said there. Thats why I said I ask permission to get it out and that usually involves them standing right next me as I do so. But while I am doing so it gives me time to talk to the officer. It doesn't always work but I have had some good experience with it in the past. I guess it is all in the presentation as with most things in life.
