New V8 - What's in a Name?
What would you rather have the engine named as?!?
From other threads, this is what I feel:
Naturally Aspirated:
CobraJet
SuperCharged:
Super CobraJet
TurboCharged:
The something other than TurboJet (as noted below, Chevy had a Turbo Jet)
Twin TurboCharged:
TwinJet
Other variations:
-HyperJet
-TwinFang
-TwinStrike

I still like the Boss name. CobraJet and Super CobraJet seem overblown to me. Boss is still subtle enough but also conveys enough power to show you who really is Boss!! Plus it is much more recognizeable than CobraJet. Not many non-car oriented people have ever heard of a CobraJet. But most people at least know about the Boss name.

How about the "Merlin"?
The P-51D Mustang had a RollsRoyce Merlin supercharged engine with 1695HP.
I've thought HOSS would be a good name on a Boss style stripe (to avoid the poser stigma)

I like Boss on one hand -- short sweet name like "Hemi" -- but it's more tied to the car model than a specific engine name itself, and that could get confusing should, hopefully, Ford come out with a Boss Mustang yet use various Boss motors across a wide variety of lines. "I've got a Boss 5.8 in my Mach I while my buddy has a Boss 5.0 in his Boss Mustang..."
In the cases of the Boss 302 and Boss 351 Mustangs, the cars were about much more than just the motors themselves. The Boss 429 was essentially a handsome shipping crate to get 500+(?) of those hemi 429s out the showroom door so it, the motor that is, could be legal for use in NASCAR.
Cobra Jet has always been tied to motors, not car models, so that might work more broadly, even if slightly bit more of a mouthful. A 428 Cobra Jet could be found in a number of models for example.
What other engine names has Ford/Mercury/Lincoln used in the past?
What about an entirely new name (does EVERYTHING have to be retro-themed these days, like nobody can come up with a decent new idea or anything?)?

While I would give my right one -- correction -- both of 'em for a P-51D, Merlin really is more British in origin/etymology/allusion and linked to a Rolls Royce motor.

I think the Boss name is the only engine moniker from any auto maker to carry the same cachet with as broad a range of people, including those who aren't hardcore enthusiasts, as does Dodge's Hemi tagline. For that reason, and it's elegant simplicity, I think the idea of attaching this name to the new V8 engine family is a good one. From a marketing standpoint nothing else stacks up nearly so well among such a potentially large audience.
That said, I don't think that this has to limit the entire engine family to merely one name. I like the idea of utilizing Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet on forced induction motors, with the SCJ moniker seeming especially appropriate, is a very good one. And perhaps the SCJ tag could denote something more than simply the addition of a power adder. A different tag would seem appropriate if Ford decided to go the same route as AMG has with their new V8, or Ford has in the past with engines like the old SC V6 out of the T-Bird (or the more recent Ford GT...and many others), giving higher performance models their own bespoke engine blocks. Again, a distinct moniker seems appropriate to differentiate here.

Voted for BOSS - simple, short, and sweet. Also more readily associated with Ford.
Oh yeah "Merlin" also happens to be used by World Products for BBC crate motor, blocks, and heads.

well i think if they used "BOSS" what would happen if they wanted to make an BOSS 302 SE...it wouldent be so speacial, if all mustangs had a boss motor...but in thinking with mustangs...they could alway make a COBRA SE with a COBRAJET motor, so its very hard to decide. i think ford wants to do both and thats why the premium came to be, but instead of premium, it really needs to sound more powerful. ULTAMITE V8 would even be better. example situation.. some kid:"hey man what motor you got in that thing?" Mustang owner:"well i didnt want to go with the twin force v6, so i went past the premium v8, and i got the ULTAMITE V8"...Kid:"whoa man, thats a beast!" ...end.... alright now i feel a bit foolish but ive made my point lol, feel free to critic my performance lol seriously though, i dont really care if the call it the fluffy foo-foo V8 as long as those challengers and comaros are in my rearview mirrior and im not seeing tailights in from of me, ill be happy
