That's right--the 2009 45th Anniversary Mustang will feature "hips" over the rear wheels. In fact, one Ford source expressed concern at the Detroit Auto Show that the Camaro concept--from the A-pillar back--looked so much like the '09 Mustang that many in the design studio are worried that some may think that Ford copied the Camaro design, when in fact Ford has been working on the 2009 Mustang for 2-3 years already.

I'm glad to hear that the hips will be returning to the car, that was definitely one of the more popular complaints with the members.

I think the most critical part of this refresh will be the presence of an IRS.

You also mentioned that the styling would be more contemporary as well (in the HTT interview), I can't wait to hear more about the car.

That's a great addition! Now do I keep the '05 or trade?

Brad/Steve....I don't understand what you mean about "hips". Are you talking about the flanks resembling those on the 69/70's (or earlier I guess). And if so, how is that "more contemporary" - not that that style or design wouldn't be as stunning today as it was then.

Mark, hips are the hunched 1/4 panels like the 69-70 Mustang, look at the Challenger and Camaro concepts, they also have the rear 1/4 hips as well.

When I mean more contemporary, I am guessing that it won't be precieved so much as a "retro" design but it will still have the trademark styling cues. We'll see.

No, it'll look like a Mustang. I think it is just as a reference to the rear 1/4 panel hips. Or, maybe I misread.

The 69/70 should be the next evolution of the mustang.

No no... i don't think it'll look like the Camaro, but the styling cues.

Cover up the front/rear of the camaro concept... and it could pass as a mustang...

That rear 1/4 has a very mustang influence.
Which is why people who don't know cars really well say 'NICE MUSTANG' when they see that picture.

I can't wait to see the 2009 Mustang GT
It'll look even more muscley than the 05-08s if it has 'hips'

NOW... if it has as ducktail rear integrated (like it should...HINT HINT) where a spoiler isn't needed.....HINT..save money on parts)
I"M SOLD

Oh yeah.. I need a 5.4 engine as well :P

Better start saving up, since that will be right around the time I am looking for a new car. I am crossing my fingers for IRS, a 6 speed, and more hp too.

I'd love to see rear quarter windows similar to the '69 - '70 Mustangs. And hips are definitely a good thing!!

I'd be all over it if it were like that. Looks like I'm gonna have to wait for late '08 to buy a new car.

Wow - fantastic news. Now this link will be the first thing I check each day as I'm already dreading my "underpowered" Mustang GT facing the 400+ HP Challengers in a couple of years. Of course, a nice SE in 08 will curb my appetite some if they do it right. Otherwise - a new 09 will fit right in the 3rd space in my garage.
