New '12 Boss Owner, Help!

Hello all,

I purchased a '12 Boss 302 in Houston three days ago (#3232) and drove it back to Oklahoma City the following day. When I got back I started it later that night and it was very difficult getting the car into reverse and first gear. I started it this afternoon and I CANNOT get the car into reverse, first, or second gear. It barely gets into third and fourth. When I try to get it into First the RPM's drop as if the clutch isn't fully disengaged but even if I muscle it I can't get the car fully into gear. What can I do to fix this problem?? The car is still under warranty but I'm still obviously worried that I just bought a $35k lemon....

Any help is greatly appreciated,

-Will

Will,......congrats on your Boss. Nice car.
There have been reports of troubles with the 2012 Boss transmissions. There was an issue with the syncros for some of the gearing if I am correct? You did check your transmission fluid, right?
You can also contact Deysha on this forum. They work for Ford and my be able to help you out if you take your car into the dealership.
Good luck.

Definitely take it to your local dealer asap. Doesn't sound good. Is this your first mustang with an mt-82? You have to really depress the clutch all the way to the floor in these cars.... But I'm guessing you're doing that and this is a bigger issue...

Yes I am depressing the clutch all the way to the floor. I'll call the dealer tomorrow but I am very, very worried about this issue. I've heard issues of clutch cables and losing tension but even if the dealer says they can help, as the car sits now I can't even drive it.

How do I go about checking my tranny fluid? I haven't done that yet.

05 and later don't use cable actuated clutches, they are hydraulic, and it sounds like yours has air in the system.

Fluid is checked just like most all manuals, pull fill plug on the side and dip your finger in and the fluid should be just a little below the bottom of the hole.

But, just take it to the dealer, use the warranty.

I appreciate the input thus far. How do you guys recommend I get it to the dealer? (seeing that I can't get the car into gear). Is there a temporary fix I can do to drive it in or am I going to damage something?

Have it towed! Try not to shift it until it gets checked or fixed! Checking the fluid isn't as simple as looking at a dipstick because there isn't one for manuals.

Leave it alone until you get it in for service.

This.

And I'd be calling that dealer where you bought it from and giving them an earful or better yet, a faceful.

If it is air in the hydraulic clutch... You should be able to shift into gear with the engine off. This would help to verify trans issue or clutch issue.

I would think if the clutch isn't moving when depressed it is possible you have a leak in the hydraulic clutch system. Check around the master, slave and fluid line for leaks.
Don't let them tow the car. make sure they send a flat bed to come get it. The last thing you want is your new to you Boss hanging by a hook.
Good luck. I am sure it will be resolved for you.

have you tried letting the car roll back or forward just a bit. I know they are famous for being hard to get into gear especially first.

Hello wbraun88,

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new Boss 302. My name is Deysha with Ford Service. You should have it checked out by your dealer and speak to your service manager about this. He is in the best position to look into this for you and can check into any warranty, assistance, recalls, or customer satisfaction programs that may apply to your vehicle.

Also, remember repairs done at a Ford Dealer come with a 24 months/unlimited miles warranty. You can schedule an appointment online here.

Thank you Deysha, I have called a local dealer and he gave me the number for Ford towing so that I don't have to pay for the tow: 1-800-241-3673. Unfortunately the weather is terrible and snowy right now so I'm just going to leave the car where it is (covered parking) until it clears up, then roll it out and have it towed on a flatbed to the dealer. I'll keep everyone posted and thanks so much for the help thus far!

Why wait? The tow truck driver can get it loaded in the snow. Heck who knows maybe it will be fixed by the time the snow melts a bit. Congrats on the new ridde and sorry it had to bum you out so soon. My fuel pump went out on the second day I owned my stang. The sting from that went away as soon as I was able to drive my car again. you will get it fixed in no time.

Update: I'll be having the car towed to a nearby dealer tonight so hopefully I'll know by tomorrow what the issues are. I started the car again yesterday and it shifts fine when the engine is off but is completely locked up and won't go into gear when it's on. Looks like the clutch is done for but hopefully either the warranty or the dealer I bought it from will be footing the bill!

I hope that statement is not true in terms of "hopefully". That should still be covered under Ford's warranty...
