Need help with a noise

For the past several months my car has been making what I think sounds like an exhaust leak. It does not happen at idle, only at 2000+ rpms and at low speeds. Cruising around town is embarrassing. It may happen at higher speeds but the wind may wash out the sound. I checked and tightened everything up good but no change. Took it to a shop to have a friend do a ride along and he believed it to be a heat shield rattling, he thought it sounded more like a thin metal tapping sound. I finally had time to get it to the dealer and their Roush tech believed it was a bad resonator. They changed out the h-pipe and that appeared to solve the issue for a day. The problem is back and the car is at the dealer for the past 2 days and they are clueless. They have got nothing from ford engineers on it either. The dealer contacted a few other mustang owners and they reported the same issue, but only intermittent.

Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?

Thanks!

I had the same thing happen but it was a heat shield that came untacked... Just like your friend said.

Some more info may help... But I think I have the exact same noise. Mine happens mostly from a stop on light acceleration, but can be duplicated easily also at low speeds with anything that can reflect sound back into the cabin. Example: next to a car when leaving from a stop light. I had a oil leak and took mine to the dealer. Rode with their Master Tech and duplicated the noise. He was able to duplicate the noise while running it on a lift. He said the noise comes from the bell housing area. He checked all the bell housing bolts and all other hardware in that area. Found nothing loose. He called tech assistance. They told him he could remove trans and inspect but he most likely would find nothing and the noise would persist. I opted to wait for now (Especially since they were removing the timing cover for the second time and did not want the transmission on the ground too). I too would REALLY like a solution to this problem if this is the same noise you have. Is kind of embarrassing pulling up to people and hearing this loud ticking/clicking noise as I pull up/away on a brand new car. But I also do not really want my vehicle to be the test mule...

14Glassback, that is the exact same issue. The sound bounces off everything right back into the cabin. I plan to go up today and listen with the tech and GM so that everything is being checked before I tell them to take her apart.

After talking to the tech and the sound definitely coming from the engine/transmission area, they will be taking her apart on Monday. I'll post the findings when I get them.

I've been having the same kind of sound. I can only hear it with the windows up, but it sounds like it is coming from the back of the car to me.

So before taking the car apart, my dealer talked with additional ford engineers and other roush techs. It was determined that Ford considers the noise normal operation of the engine. They found that most reports have occurred after the first oil change and the problem eventually will go away on its own. Some times after a few thousand miles, some times after 25000-30000 miles are on the car. If mine is the later of the two, it will be another 3-4 years as I only put 6000 on my car a year. Guess what, my warranty will be up by then. So it looks like I will wait a few thousand miles (4-6 months) and if no change, it will be time to put louder exhaust on to mask the sound. Pretty sad to make the car louder to cover up engine noise. But at least I won't be embarrassed anymore.

i had something very similar happen to me with an older car. Took it to 5,6,7 different shops until someone finally figured it out! it was my manifold. the welds had broken on the manifold, causing it to rattle at low speeds (any gear around 2,200 RPMS) it sounds like heatshield shield type of noise as well which threw every shop around the bend.

Oh no, I hope we don't have another intake manifold issue with the Mustang like the plastic manifold issue back in the 90's.
