My take on the '09 refresh
Ford needs to treat the Mustang like Harley Davidson treats its bikes and coca cola treats Coke Classic. It is a national icon, immune from the fashion trend of the minute. I wanna see an S197 produced for the next 50 frigging years, and when they change it, there needs to be rioting and blood in the streets.
uhh, okaaaay...

The F-bodies looked pretty much the same from 1993 to their death in 2002. Ford made major changes to the Mustang's styling twice during the same time period and did things to keep people interested, such as special editions like the Bullitt and Mach 1. Result: Mustang survives and thrives, F-Bodies don't.
Ford needs people to buy cars and if they can't keep people interested and bring in new customers, it's R.I.P. Mustang.

I really hate to disagree MustangNation but not only is Vermillion06 correct but in addition, according to J. Mays from Ford.. The current S-197 Mustang took design elements of the original 65-66 such as the greenhouse and horizontal trunk along with the triangular shaped 1/4 windows in the C-pillar section..On the other hand ? I'll agree the design also includes elements taken from the 69-70 such as the headlight, grill and tail light sections..However as being a dead ringer for the 1969 is concerned ? no way is that even close to being accurate and not just for the reasons I've already stated but most of all, the 69-70 Mustang's greenhouse is a full fastback design known as the sportsroof which slopes all the way back into the trunk area where on the other hand ? the current S-197 greenhouse clearly does not but instead resembles the original 65-66 2+2 fastback design..Therefore IMHO ? the current S-197 is much more a dead ringer for the original 65-66 2+2 fastback than the 69.

I don't see the point in refreshing a RETRO design. It's a stoopid path to take, and if Ford does it, we're gonna end up with yet another Mustang II. The original 1965 was so classic, they couldn't wait to eff with it, and it spiraled downhill from there.
Mustang designs got so bad, they had to go RETRO with the S197, which is also a CLASSIC. Sure as shjt, they're eff with that too.

I think the nose it too high...too much clearance.
I saw the Camaro. Beautiful car, but if it has a fault it's too modern and not enough like the '69.
The '60 Camaro, '70 Chevelle, '69 Mustangs were as good looking as cars have ever gotten, to my mind, and if they 'update' to 'keep up' with the more 'modern' retro (?) Camaro, then they are missing the point.
Modern retro is oxymoron.

Is there an echo or something in here ? I previously stated the current S-197 greenhouse will remain unchanged for the upcoming 2010 re-fresh

And there we go again.
I like your take on it but agree the front end it a little too high, I also think that the hips need to be a bit more prevalent from the side. Though I like the lines for the door might look better with C scoops (like the GT appearance package). Just as long as NONE of the Guigaro rear or interior make it (which I doubt it will) we will be good

Missed my point entirely. '65, '66, '69 is not the issue. The issue is the S197 is a benchmark design, which will soon be ruined by the 2010. That will also be further "improved" in 2018, and again in 2027, and again in 2035 and again in 2050, at which time, some Ford marketing genius will come up with the incredible idea that they out to do a RETRO based on the ancient 2005 S197.
And there we go again.
And there we go again.
the S-197's current retro or benchmark design as you refer to it.. is not being replaced, it's merely getting an updated front and rear end face lift along with(HIPS)being added to the quarter panels in order to give the car more of an aggressive overall apperance while the current S-197 greenhouse (roofline) remains unchanged..Therefore just what do you expect Ford to do ? keep the car just the way it is for the next 10,15,20 years or so without updating it ? meanwhile Ford would end up losing even more of it's customers to both GM and Daimler/Chrysler thanks to their inability of competing against their Camaro and Challenger respectfully because they chose to just sit back and do nothing instead of keeping pace with the competition by updating the Mustang so it remains fresh in holding customer interest...and I really don't mean to come off as a wisea$$ here but if you were ever put in charge over at Ford ? all I can say is.. God help us all
