My take on the '09 refresh

Here's my take on what a refresh of the S197 would look like using some of the Giugiaro concept's styling cues. I tried to make it as production looking as possible:

I guess I'll find out how close I got in about 2 years

Not to criticize your work, but I don't like the front end at all.

Not bad. The only thing i really don't like about the Guigaro mustang is the rear end. It's too short and the tail lights make me want to vomit. I also hope they don't take inspiration from that ungodly interior.

You don't want genuine horse hair seats?

I too like it, with the exception of the front end

It's not a clean sheet design so I'll be up front. I hope this is what it looks like so that mine becomes an instant classic.

Extend the chin a bit more, a touch more exageration of the top of the door line into the rear fender and round off the trunk ledge and I might be worried.

A dab of chrome here and there would be interesting to see, like on the bumpers and sideskirts. That is at least as long as they're not made from the same crumple me! beer cans they use on the F-150.

It's just not new enough. You work looks great, but Ford better take it further than that.

I don't like the italian thing at all. The nice part about the current 'stang is the retro American look. Make it more like that. Why make it Italian??? I hate it.

I don't see the point in refreshing a RETRO design. It's a stoopid path to take, and if Ford does it, we're gonna end up with yet another Mustang II. The original 1965 was so classic, they couldn't wait to eff with it, and it spiraled downhill from there.

Mustang designs got so bad, they had to go RETRO with the S197, which is also a CLASSIC.

You mean sell 385,000 cars in one year like the Mustang II did in 1974? That would be great!

Oh come on now, none of the Mustang designs have been really "bad"; they all have some good features. Some are just not as "classic" as others. For example, the '71 - '73s look big and bulky, while the S197 is nearly the same length and width but looks sleek.

So what are they supposed to do? They can't let the car stagnate. They need to do something to keep the car looking fresh.

It does have hips, they're just a lot more subtle than the gigantic 6" tall hips I've seen on photochops before. I used the Giugiaro "hips" but kept them more "production" looking.

Why not extend the run of the S197 a couple additional years?
This '05-'08 body is very popular, why risk f-ing it all up with folks by over doing it for the sake of change. I would vote for what works over changing for changes sake.

Think a bit about what you just said. The current S197 is a dead ringer of the 1969. It's called a RETRO design for a reason, because it looks better than anything since 1969.

Like it or not, the S197 has a giant flux capacitor , and whenever you drive it, the thing transcends space and time and you are brought back to the days when Mustangs looked like Mustangs.

I need a fresh Mustang like I need a hole in my head.

They're better off with theme mustangs, like the Cali. Sp. and the Boss and the Mach and the GT350 and the Cobra. THey can do those forever and then start again. Screw the Italian design thing.

Listen to the newbie, AND BELIEVE

No need to release a 2nd attempt at "going retro" when the first attempt is the biggest success that could be reasonably hoped for, style-wise. Granted, S197 cannot last forever, but they should extend the run a year or two at least and use the extra time to get more bugs out of the next design...

Could all be wishful thinking, as the approach I suggest is not very sexy for the designers and "vision planners"

Hey, for once, I agree with Jamo!

Take the CS edition. It included some albeit minor appearance modifications. They could reuse that approach for the Cobra and make it a sort of S197.5 appearance, instead of a complete redesign.

Nobody will like the full redesign if it comes too early!
