My solution to Brembos and a spare tire.

My car isn't even due in until next week (yeah right), but I wanted to have a full size spare tire to fit over the Brembos and also not cause trac lock problems. I bought a used 07-09 GT500 18" wheel off ebay for $50. Then I ordered a cheap used tire from www.bestusedtires.com, size 255/45/18. That and the 255/40/19 have very similar diameters. The full size spare will fit in the spare tire well, but stick up roughly 2 inches. I might need to let a little air out of the tire, but the car comes with an air pump. I'll have roughly $150 in my spare, and lose a bit of trunk space, but is well worth it for the piece of mind.

hmmmm . . . are you sure that will clear the Brembos? I thought that required 19" wheel?

07-09 GT500s have 14" Brembos and use these wheels. When I get the car, I'll update the post after I bolt on the wheel.

Falken used an 18" wheel. A Ford GT or FR500 style I believe.

If anyone else wants to try this, I have an American Muscle GT500 wheel w/ some curb rash, w/ a nearly-new NT555 in 255/45/18 mounted...I'll let the package go for $100 + shipping.

Do you plan on cutting the carpet and trim in the trunk to accommodate the wheel/tire? I assume that the spare tire well is not deep enough to place the carpet back over it.

Some enterprising individual should make a spare that would clear Brembos and fit in the wheel well while being the proper circumference. Then market them on these sites.

You can fit a fullsize tire in there but the panel/carpet sits an inch or two higher than the rest of the floor surfaces in the trunk.

Not sure, I hate to cut up anything on a new car. I'll probably just lay the carpet over it, even though it won't lay flat. Supposedly it sticks up 2 inches. Here is a pic I found where someone did cut the carpet.

OR you could do that^^^, which actually looks kinda cool. Would be a neat touch at car shows.

Thanks for this post. I have been trying to figure out this same thing. Now that I know a full size will fit in the spare well this is the route I will take. This will also helps since I got some minor curb rash on one of my wheels which will now be the spare. I think it looks really good with the carpet cut out too.

Do GT-500's come with spares? If so I would assume it fits flat in the spare tire hole and isn't the same as the stock rims/tires.

No, they have always come with fix-a-flat and a compressor. The picture above is just one of a GT500 owner who wanted a full size spare. It does fit, but sticks out the top 2 inches. That is why he cut the carpet around it.

I ran my BMW with no spare but I carried this kit:

http://www.amazon.com/Slime-Powerspa...2972097&sr=8-8

It is a fantastic kit and a great little air compressor. Only about $70 on sale.

Thanks I knew our cars didn't, but figured a 48k plus car would. I think what I will do is get a normal GT spare and use that. If one of the front tires blows out, I'll swap the back to the front and run the spare out back.
