My MT82 shifts beautifully
My MT82 rocks. No problems of any kind and I am a very spirited driver. Lots of tire smoke and redline shifts.
I'd like to point out that I am a very experienced driver and have had quite a few manual transmissions over the years, especially in Mustangs. I've drag raced each of them at our local tracks over the years and consider myself much better than average at working 3 pedals and a shifter. Everytime I read another "MT82 sucks" thread I have to wonder if inexperienced users are damaging these transmissions.
The vast majority of us with MT82's are having zero problems, but the loud/vocal minority would have us believe that there is a widespread problem. Have there been some isolated failures with the MT82? Sure! But that is true of any mass-produced item.

no issues either but I get nervous. The only thing i feel, but my other mustangs have done, is 1st to 2nd clicks into place but its not rough or forced. That may also be because the car only has 1k miles on it. My MGW short shifter on the Mach 1 was real notchy for a bit.
I have had my MT6 3.73 2011GT since July (5/10 build) and although I only have 400 some miles the trans has not had any problems, notchy from 1st-2nd about 50% of the time but that's it. Once in a while I seem to hear a faint whine like a distant whistle accelerating in 2nd gear but it's not regular.
I have tried putting pressure to the left when shifting 1st-2nd and it's hit or miss as for a smooth shift.
Nothing I have written do I consider detrimental to driving the car or the trans itself, never been locked out of 2nd, reverse or any grinding in any gear up-or-downshifting. Never had the clutch stick to the floor, have been to redline 1st-2nd-3rd numerous times, even caught the fuel cutoff once or twice.
I have exclusively driven MTs, 1987 LX 5.0, 2001 Super duty, 2003 GT(clunky 1-2 shift 3650 Tremec), 2009 Jetta, 2011 GT, I still have and drive the 2003GT and VW and I am a professional driver with 21 years on the job all MT vehicles at my company.
Read lots of threads people asking how-when-what rpm do you shift, 1st MT car, new to manuals in the past year. Maybe some problems are operator error, some not, but it's possible to wreck your trans with this much hp if you keep driving it with bad shifting habits. Just because the car cost $XXX doesn't mean it's bulletproof, no car is.

I am waiting for the MGW shifter to come out, it will be a whole linkage-shifter combination. MGW will show whether the stock remote box does not rotate the input linkage enough. I'm not necessarily going to buy the MGW but it would prove why 1-2 shift is not as precise as it could be.

Does the MGW unit correct the linkage alignment or allow for adjustment?

i do see the issue though as this sloppiness is allowing the box and the linkage to not articulate cleanly which in turn makes shifting vague.
our shift box is so rigid that any issues with shifting from now will be internal to the tranny which obviously we cannot rectify.

I'm pretty sure no one is claiming that it is a widespread problem. Obviously, only the minority is affected.
I'm just curious why the MT82 shifted beautifully for most of us when first bought, then after a month or two notchiness (or random grinding/lockout for some, like myself) develops in certain transmissions but not others.
I'm not interested in *****ing about the issue, as it seems to be the trend now, but want to know why Ford hasn't fixed it. Just because a statistically small percentage of manual owners are experiencing it, that doesn't mean it's okay to dust it under a rug. Not to mention that the same "issues" are occurring in some 2012's.
Also, the argument that these complaints are from the vocal minority is valid. BUT, if you look, a lot of us were already registered forum members before we received our car, so it's not like everyone only registered to complain about the transmission.

Wow... some serious attitude problems around here. I'm not going to name any names coughPolishAmericanRacingcough but this has gone down the "Im on an internet forum and I'm entrenched in one camp and will argue for my side" road.
My transmission is perfect with 4000 miles and I desperately hope it stays that way....because this is by far my favorite car I have ever owned...one of my favorites that i have ever driven....so I would have every reason to be entrenched in favor of there not being a problem... but it sounds to me that there may acutally be a design issue or a tolerance issue...either of which may show up with age for those lucky enough to have good shifting units right now.
Regardless, I would like to know the truth and I'm looking forward to something official from Ford.

My tranny makes a little whine-type noise when dead cold, but it goes away in under a minute of actually moving...never had any other issues with it, 2900 miles in 11 months. All in all i would say, so far, i like it better than the t-56 that my 03 cobra had.
I would also like to mention how tight a ship Getrag runs in their plant here in Maiden North Carolina that i have visited several times, very clean by comparison to others i have seen.

On a cold Minnesota morning the shifter will be a little stiff for the first minute, just like pretty much every car I've ever had. I'd say mine is as perfect as I have any right to expect it to be. Regarding the location of reverse, I like it where it is. Usually when you are using reverse it's because you maneuvering into a parking spot and you have to switch back and forth between reverse and first a couple of times. Why not have those gears right next to each other instead of on opposite sides of the gates? I've never accidentally gotten reverse when I wanted first. With the Steeda Tri-Ax shifter, it's even nicer.
I thought I had tranny/shifter problems.....then I realized it was the better half commenting from the passenger seat. (I think she was laughing at the 67 SS 396 behind us.) Just passed 6000 miles since Nov. 29th with no problems to speak of. Cool weather shows a bit of stiffness....I just let the car warm up before hitting it hard.
Like any new vehicle, I drive it and do not expect any problems but things happen. Hope there is a solution that covers all the manuals out there.

Luvin Mine :-). My only disappointment in the GT is the seemingly (to me anyway) weak clutch. After having a Mach1, and My by far most favorite Stang, my 09 Bullitt, I would like a stiffer clutch response. Now naturally, having the Moditis disease, I have added a Tri-Ax to the mix. But for me, the new Getrec is fine.
