The Mustang Wave???
The Mustang Wave???
First I'm a lifelong Mustang guy. My first car was a 69 Mach 1 and while I have been in other cars from time to time, well over 3/4 of my 30+ years of driving have been behind the wheel of mustangs. I feel a real camaraderie with other mustang drivers and for that matter drivers of all American Muscle cars including Chevys and Dodges (love the new Camaros and Challengers, not mustangs but **** good looking cars).
I find myself giving a nod and small wave to pretty much every nice mustang I see. Seldom is it returned and I've had some very nice mustangs. When I ride a motorcycle, nearly all other riders return a wave. Corvette drivers wave to each other. Hell, even muscle heads give a nod and a, "how you doing?"
I would love to start a tradition of recognizing and respecting other American Muscle Cars as we pass. I would suggest something like a raised fist with the thumb at the side which is sign language for the letter, "A" as in AMERICAN muscle. Ultimately it's all about (North) American workers making great cars for (North) American drivers.
Now I know that many of you might not respond favorably to this, because of brand fanaticism, or just an unwillingness to show respect for, "the other guys." But, I would love to get and give a little love/respect/recognition from other fans of the modern American Pony/Muscle car.
After all it's not like these guys are driving STI's.

Dude....I have lived in PA, ME and NY and everywhere I have lived I always wave to other Stang owners and almost all the time get a wave back....or they wave first. Same with my brother, I thought the Mustang Wave was already a tradition.
This is one thing I wish Mustang owners would pick up on. Jeep owners have the wave. Motorcyclists extend their arms in passing. Everyone who drives a truck in TX extends a finger or two over the steering wheel. But Mustang guys... meh. I am like you, I try to extend the friendly gesture, and it is seldom returned.
Women are too uptight. When I had my Jeep Wrangler most of the guys would wave, the women wouldn't. Around here Mustang owners usually won't wave and if you're in a V6 and wave at some guy driving a GT you're more likely to get the bird than a wave in response. Some of us just really need to get right the f**k over ourselves. It's just a car.
My dad has had several Vette's over the past ten years and whenever I have driven them it's amazing how nearly 90% of the Vette's you pass wave at you regardless of where you are. I gave thumbs up to a guy in a 10' GT500 and he returned the gesture, but in the Mustang I rarely get waived at.
I've experienced Sporadic responses here in Northern Virginia. Often, folks appear reluctant to either look your way or acknowledge that you've offered a 'thumbs up", or whatever - however, if they're concentrating on their driving for good reason, I'm good with that too.
Here in NOLA it's more of a head nod instead of a wave. However I am nearly struck with inthusiam when I see another 'stang. I gotten props however from many different owners of different car classes.
Can't wait for the 5.0!

I haven't had a response yet. This is my first Mustang and I am surprised there isn't more 'friendship' amongst other owners here in Southern Oregon. I see some Mustangs in the smaller Klamath Basin, but I see a lot over in the Rogue Valley that has the I-5 and quite a few Californians moving up.
When riding with my friend in his Corvette, he gets wave backs from every Vette owner.

I'm used to giving/receiving the "low 5" from other sport bikes when I'm out riding my bike. This is my first Mustang also and every time I pass any newer (05+) or any modded Mustang I make sure I'm looking right at the driver to give a smile or wave. So far every time it's been somebody who isn't looking over and is just watching the road. I think I'm 0 for 20 so far.
There are honestly so many Mustangs around I'd wear myself out trying to wave at all of them. So I just save my waves for any of the obviously modded ones and see if I get anything back.
I try to give a big thumbs up when I can for just about every S-197 I see and other Mustangs as well, and nearly 100% of the time I run into a fellow GT500 owner I get a wave (or flashing headlights)

In the Mustang, 10% or less will there be a wave (usually I don't initiate unless same color as mine)
