Mustang Plant Shift Changes

Ford Cutting Jobs At Auto Alliance Plant

Dearborn (WWJ) -- An estimated 900 jobs are being cut at the Auto Alliance facility in Flat Rock.

In July, the factory will be cut from two shifts to one, but the assembly line speed will be increased for that one remaining shift by 35 percent.

Ford says it's part of the process of matching capacity with demand. Some of the Flat Rock workers will be shifted to plants that are adding capacity, such as Michigan Assembly Plant or Chicago.

Auto Alliance is the joint venture between Ford and Mazda. Workers make parts for the Ford Mustang and the Mazda 6. A sales decline of the Mazda 6 prompted the elimination of the shift.

Meantime, Ford chairman Bill Ford, Jr., will be answering questions about Detroit's auto industry. He's the guest speaker at a Livonia Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Laurel Manor at 11:30 a.m. WWJ's Autobeat reporter Jeff Gilbert will be there.

That is Lean Manufacturing. I know I work for Honda. They want you to do more with less. It looks good on paper but never works right when implemented, really kills quality and moral.

They may change their tune if 2011 Mustang demand goes crazy. 2010 Mustang production has been very soft as everyone is waiting for the much improved 2011 drivetrains. I order all the Mustangs for our dealership, and I've only ordered one 2010 Mustang in the last 3 months, and only because a customer wanted something very specific. I've ordered zero 2010 Mustangs for store stock in the last 3 months in anticipation of the 2011's. I imagine many other dealers are doing the same, and AAI is twidling their thumbs with little to build right now.

You hit it right on the head. I work at Ford Stamping plant, They have cut workers down soo much that I cant believe they expect things to continue. .
We had 1300 people as of 4 years ago now down to alittle above 700 at most, The plant is not functioning that well, not to mention the morale on salary and union members is at it lowest.

AAI is definitely feeling it right now. The 2009 Mazda6 wasn't exactly a boomer when it came out, and the 2010 Mustang didn't fly out the door either.

From what I've heard, the 2011 is already shaping up to something similar to what we saw in 2005 when the first S197s rolled out the door. People are ordering more here locally than they have in several years, and that's a good thing.

I hate to say it being a Mazda owner now, but the new design direction is horrible, and without a major backing from Ford, I don't like where they're heading.
