Motorcraft 5w50 analysis vs M1 5w50
Since I got 3 free oil changes from my local ford dealer, I used one last December. I have read about the motorcraft oil shearing quickly, bu it was a free change
Anyways, I am logging oil on this car so I end up with a database to rely on for oil intervals down the road.
On the M1 I had about 4800 miles with 300 of them being track miles
On the motorcraft I put on about 2700 miles of which about 450 or so were track miles. Results below for discussion.
I am on castrol syntec now, and I'll put about 700 track miles on the oil and about 2000 street miles.

Lol looks like they get to samples faster this month. My last sample in May took 3+ weeks to get done.

For some quick reference, a couple oils below with cSt at 100C:
M1 5w50 cSt : 17.5
M1 5w40 cSt : 14.6
Motorcraft 5w50 cSt : 21
Castrol 5w50 cSt : 18.5
Castrol 5w40 cSt : 13.9
Redline 5w50 cSt: 21
The M1 viscosity decreased far less than the Motorcraft (assuming their cSt is correct). Very interested to see how the Castrol holds up.
I need to go with Redline at some point too, it's just a lot more $$ expecially when I get castrol and M1 on sale for $5.99/qt

Yes, they were really quick with mine. I just sent it out late last week, already got results! Quite pleased.

For those of us who don't know what that stuff means, could you do a quick dumbed-down explanation of the results? And where do you find 5w-50 Castro and M1 for $5.99?

They have articles and such on the website also. The above links should get you what you want.

Excellent links above... read up a bit I suggest! Better than what I could explain...
Regarding M1 and Castrol - watch NAPA. Once or twice a year they have sales on the 5w50, either M1 or Castrol or both. I stock up

I missed the NAPA sale this year, but had bought Castrol over the winter, so I had 10 quarts just waiting to go. My car burns basically zero oil, so I have 2 extra quarts now, but won't need to do my own oil change until next summer since Ford owes me 2 more... March will get the Motorcraft for a couple early season events in the cooler weather. Going to limit track time on Motorcraft to 1 or 2 days though based on the apparently HUGE drop in cSt at 100C (21 down to 13.5).
If anyone knows of a good source of Redline (or is local to CT and wants to go halfs on a 55 gal drum) let me know...

And if you can't wait, Walmart typically has 5 quart containers of Castrol Edge w/ Syntec tech or Mobil 1 for $23, and Advance Auto almost always has an oil change special on both of them for about $33 for both the 5 quarts and a good filter like a Purolator PureOne.

But almost twice the miles on the M1 than the motorcraft... Thinned out to 40w after only 2600 miles or so. I don't think I would go on a longer interval with the motorcraft based on these test results. Street driving tho I would not hesitate to go much further.

So had the oil changed to MC by the dealership of purchase Nov 12'. By July 13' almost a quart low? WTF? Switched to RP 5W-40 HPS. Still full almost 7500K later. $8.50/QT. FRPP filter.

I'm not very hard on my engine. I always wait until at least some water temp movement before I start driving. Once water temp is stable in normal, I'll WOT or romp on it, but never before its warmed up.
The last oil sample had a few runs down The Tail of the Dragon on 129. I didn't have any cars in front of me so I was able to really have some fun. 5-6k 2nd gear sustained RPM's. Best part was having the windows down and hearing all 4 tires complaining with the sustained corner loading. "What the hell is that noise?", oh **** thats the tires squalling. lol.
I plan on doing an oil sample at every change. I'm using a 6k interval, 3k tire. rotation. If its coming apart I'd like to catch it before its catastrophic.
I spoke with tech support at RP and asked about using 5w-50 (RP has a 5w-40), unless you have sustained 5-7k rpm for 20+ minutes there is no need for higher weights. The higher weight oil helps remove heat from the engine and helps maintain a minimum hot oil weight during sustained heating of the oil. In almost all cases on the street there isn't enough room to heat the 5w-50 oil for its intended purpose.

3 of my oil changes/samples are on this report. The lowest mileage is the factory as delivered oil. The other 2 are RP 5W-20. I'm not very hard on my engine.
