4th place: Dodge Challenger SE
A yacht trying to keep up with speedboats, but the ride and style are smooth.

3rd place: Chevrolet Camaro RS
A quick coupe whose weight sacrifices fun and cartoonish cabin compromises comfort.

2nd place: Ford Mustang V-6
New 3.7 is nearly as quick as last year's 4.6-liter V-8, and more fun to drive, too.

1st place: Hyundai Genesis 3.8 Track
The only one that looks and feels like a sports car. Surprise, we liked it best.

Yea IDK, the numbers back up the 'stang. By far.

Tho the genisis 3.8 is very comparable. as it has the same weight to power at 11.4 lb/hp and 306hp (vs 305) almost identical weight and an advantage at 3.54 gear to the stang's 3.31, plus bigger brakes. But the stang really out performs it in the straight, and beats the braking by a healthy 7 feet.

And has a price as tested at 5-6k cheaper than all of them...

Challenger's numbers are a joke. Such a shame...
Your average 5 year old sedan can out perform it. Handily.
Good comparison tho.

Wow, that was pretty surprising. I thought the Mustang and Genesis would be close, but they would give it to the Mustang for the "fun factor" or character.

I am living in Korea right now and there are a lot of Genesis' around. Although it's not my type of car, they look great on the road. Definitely a car that looks better in person. It's a hell of a lot better than the Tiburon, that's for sure. The proportions and stance are very dramatic and it just looks like it handles as well as MT say it does.

I don't feel like it's a bad thing for the once embarassing base Mustang to be barely beaten by a car of this caliber and character. The fact that the cheaper Mustang can turn out better numbers than a pure sports car like the Genesis is pretty cool if you ask me.

They (Motor Trend) said that Genesis is the only one that looks and feels like a sports car.

Since when is Mustang (or Camaro or Challenger) supposed to be sports cars?

i think the Challenger is in the same situation as the Mustang was in. just like the Mustang (2010), the Challenger needs to get those new engines ASAP becuase the current offerings are falling behind the competition fast. their top model Challenger makes power in the same range as Ford and Chevys mid level offerings. not to mention its slower than the old 4.0 V6 Mustang..manual and automatic. hopefully it goes on a diet and takes the Camaro with it.

i wouldn't begrudge the hyundai for winning this..it's a **** good car and a very solid effort from a manufacturer that untill the last gen Tib made mostly crap.
Hell I'd love to have one of them in my garage. Would be even cooler if it got the V-8 they were teasing back in the day.

Tell an insurance agent you drive a muscle car and not a sports car... lol
To the general public, it's a sports car.
Tho yes I agree, there's much more to it than slaping a generic classification to it.

But honestly, the true idea of muscle cars were only that of when the original term deemed them as such back in the late 1960's early 1970's. Today, we associate the term muscle with the title, when we should recognize it's more the engine. Back when it was just pure, unadulterated V8 horsepower. That was Muscle.

Besides it's said the mustang originated as a pony car, it's muscle car variant was that of the torino. And once the torino left the mustang was associated it's role. just as the camaro for the chevelle...

Code:
Manufacturer Pony car Muscle car
AMC Javelin AMX
Chevrolet Camaro Chevelle
Dodge Challenger Charger
Ford Mustang Torino
Mercury Cougar Montego
Oldsmobile none 442
Plymouth Barracuda Road Runner
Pontiac Firebird GTO

Unlike the F5 faithful, I can live with these results. But if the 2012 Mustang will get new cams and a gear ratio upgrade... blah blah blah. Nah, a hp increase on paper would have made the V6 'Stang come out on top.

The Camaro is a ponycar, created to compete in the segment birthed by our beloved Mustang.

Eh, I didn't read the article yet, but just judging by the comments, the Genesis Coupe was a "Track" model, as in Track Package. I believe this comes with Brembos and the firmer suspension. Yes the V6 Mustang had the Performance Pkg, but it isn't as comprehensive as the Brembo Pkg for the GT or the Track Pkg on the Genesis.

That being said, I do like the Genesis coupe. I haven't seen any modded in my area, but they look nice and I feel they are a good value. Definitely worth a look versus the V6 Mustang and 370Z. The Mustang's interior blows the Genesis Coupe's away though.

Total fix! I hope Motortrend enjoys Hyundai's money! Wait a minute, I thought I was on Camaro 5. A great win for the Genesis and I agree with most of the comments. I think we'll see some Genesis engine upgrades 2012.

Is the "port installed camber bolt" an orderable option for $30?

That's how I read it. Nice upgrade for $30! .02 extra on the skid pad and better handling. That little change is probably why it won the figure 8 test.

I don't care for this review. I don't want to be bias, but notice the prices as tested? The Mustang was $5000 cheaper than every other car out there. They should have opted for a V6 Premium and tested them equally, and the difference would have been moot.

The Hyundai can perform, but it's interior and cheap front styling dont' do it for me. I'd have to put more money into it to get it how I like than I would a Mustang or Camaro.

Congrats Genesis, but I'd still rather have a v6 mustang. I test drove the Genesis. The price range was a little more comfortable to me than a Mustang GT at the time. On a brand new car, I heard a lot of miscellaneous rattles; trim pieces that were loose, etc. The ride was just way too harsh for our crappy Pennsylvania roads too. Might have been better with better seats. They transmitted every bump directly to your spine, I think. As for this particular review? Um, those cars had as-tested prices of 30k+. Gimme a break. For that kind of money, I'd rather have a base GT, no options, and that comparison wouldn't even come close.

There are still way too many of us folks out here that bought a first year Excel... and never got over it. I thought I HAD gotten over it, and bought a used Excel a few years later. THAT one convinced me. Hyundai would have to put Excel/Accent pricing on a Genesis or Sonata before I'd consider it seriously enough to even go drive one. I think both of them are good looking cars... but they still say Hyundai on them.
