Missing Shifts!???

Im no rookie, but I sure as hell feel like one. I swear at least 1/3 times im revving her out I miss 4th. Am I babying it too much and not slamming it in hard enough?? Today I missed 4th and the tach hit 8000+, never heard it hit the rev limiter, it sounded bad, I cringed. Will the car even rev out that high????

Anyone else noticing this happens to them or is it just that I'm not really used to it yet??

The 6 speed shifter has springs that make it WANT to go back and forth between 3rd and 4th. What that means is you only need finger tips to shift from 3rd to 4th. Let the shifter line itself up, you just give it the force. The more you grip the shifter, the more you'll accidentally miss 4th.

Look into getting the MGW shifter assembly. They're getting ready to release their second batch of the 2011+ GT shifters. I'd call and get your name on the list.

When I got mine, I had the same issue. Found out I was trying to hard. The car shifts easy. Once I lightened up, all was well and have not missed a shift since.

Get the Steeda trans mount. That solved my problem with missed shifts(mostly 3rd gear). There's plenty of threads with info on it already.

most likely as others have mentioned and you have suggested, it's not the shifter.

strong centering spring places shifter in alignment with the center pair of gates (3 and 4)

I open my grip when shifting into or within them and conversely counter it's pressure when shifting into or within either of the outside pairs of gates (1 and 2, 5 and 6)...if I fail to do this I miss shifts

shifter should never need to be 'slammed'

full depression of clutch pedal, as well

if you really hit 8K rpm, perhaps consider dealer service dept evaluating whether your rev limiter is functioning

this never happened to me so far, but I noticed I do sometimes shift to 5th instead of 3rd gear. somehow I think the different gears are a bit too close to each other in the gearbox.

I agree some guys are forcing the shifts too hard. Let the detent springs do their job. Its not the old cram and jam hurst shifter.

However, I remember reading the TR-3650 transmission can sometimes be under torque load at high rpm shifts to where it affects the shifter.

Do they make these torque limiters for the Getrags?

i noticed the clutch is tough at high rpm as well which i think is normal, just never noticed on my old stang, probably because the clutch was tough normally. Lots of changes from a few years away from mustangs and the fact i was used to the old 5.0.

The 8k thing obviously happened reallll fast but I could've SWORN the need was buried down at 8000.

just keep at it, you'll get it...I kept missing 4th at first too, just takes some getting use to since the gates are so close

It will rev that high if you pull it into second. Next time you miss 4th just calm down, push the clutch in and leave it there, and leave the shifter handle wherever you pulled it. Then slow down to about 35 mph and start letting the clutch out and see where your rpms go to, you may have pulled it from 3rd right back into second. Its easier than it sounds and I know for a fact these cars will do it with no problem.

Watch the video in my sig line. Towards the end, I do some quick shifting. Notice how my hand is very light on the shifter. The shifter in these Mustang's is the best factory shifter Ford has ever put on these cars. You just stay light on the ball and it will find all the gears on it's own.

it won't go to 8k unless you downshifted into a lower gear.

i mistimed the 1-2 shift once and the engine just shut down at ~7k rpm, shifted to 2nd and went on my way.

there was no over-revving, no back-firing, just silence and no forward motion other than coasting. all of this happened in the blink of an eye but there was no doubt that the rpm cutoff had been reached.

Hmm...I think that mightve happened because I remember the car lunging forward for a second and then I most likely thru it back into N and/or depressed the clutch.
Its like a traumatic incident that u cant remember

BTW no issues regardless...so thats good.

Normally I'd say you are doing something wrong, but I had, for the first time in my life yesterday, a problem shifting from 3rd to 4th at high RPM. It felt like 4th gear was simply locked out. I just could not get it in and decided to go to 5th instead.

Never happened before, but if it happens again, I'm going to be concerned.

Adam Corolla just sent a supercharged RTR mustang off the track because he did the same thing. Looked like he was sitting pretty close to the wheel and with the fairly light return springs to keep it centered. His angle for pulling it straight back slammed it right in to 2nd.
