MIS Track Laps

MIS Track Laps
I had the opportunity to drive on the MIS track last week. You donate $25.00 to the MIS charity foundation, and you drive 3 laps around the track. You are limited to 70MPH, although we got up to 85. It was an awesome experience to drive around the track and feel in a small way what it is like on race day. I can only imagine what it is like to drive at 200MPH!! Anyway, the driving is done this week but check it out at www.mispeedway.com. The have an hour block time from 12 noon to 1:00PM. My advice is get there a little early as you line up first come, first in line. Here are a few pictures to show what it was like. Pardon the picture quality but you get the idea.

Yes, the speed limit is 70, no passing, you follow the pace car, which was a 2011 Mustang, around the course. There were four cars, a Porsche, Saturn, a mini-van, and me. The mini van slowed down on the straightaways, but finally starting going faster. Next time I will be there early enough to make sure I am right behind the pace car. It was still fun.

I worked crew for a historic CanAm car years ago. We were running with a group doing a track day at MIS. They used about half the oval and the infield track. I got to ride on some hot laps in a twin supercharge RX7 and a Porsche turbo. The owner of the CanAm car convinced the administration of MIS to let him do a few full oval laps. His time indicated a 200 mph lap. But because of the soft tires he had he could only run a handful of laps and had to quit.

My only complaint would be that they try to limit your speed, but they have to for the 2% of drivers that are idoits and would probably wrek their cars.
85 MPH is still nothing, as I have had my current econo box up over 80 at Rockingham, much shorter track. I hope to take my future mustang to MIS someday and top 120. Then climb into a "stock car" and try to top 150.
