Looky at what was on my doorstep when I got home...

Anyone want a low buck gear shift ****???

Late Model Resto has them on sale this week only, for only $20!!!

That's $15 off regular price.

Only thing I wish they would do is include a one piece nut/boot retainer like some of the others you see and make that part in chrome or polished.

But hey, for $20 you can't beat it! 8)

Well, since I didn't care too much for the black boot adapter I took the black off and polished the aluminum underneath!

Found a drill bit just the right size to fit the hole in the center and clamped the adapter to it with the set screw. Then ran the drill and used a little bit of 120 grit sand paper to remove the black anodizing. Then with the drill running again I applied some blue magic aluminum polish and then some car wax to protect the finish.

Now all I need to do is run by the hardware store and get a chrome nut to replace the black one and SHAZAM!!! All shiny!

Well, crud!!!

Best laid plans and all...

#1 is, the hardware store didn't have a big enough chrome nut to replace the black one in the **** kit.

#2 > The boot adapter or collar or whatever you call it, is at the very least, too short, plus it doesn't fit tight to the boot.

If you install it and slip it all the way down into the boot then screw the nut and **** on all the way, it leaves about 3/8" of threads exposed between the top of the boot adapter and the nut for the ****.

Now, the adapter has a set screw so you can raise it up to the bottom of the nut, but then the boot doesn't stay up around the bottom of the adapter because it doesn't fit tight to the adapter so you have a gap there.

Now, saying all this, I made the thing work by basically gluing the boot to the bottom of the adapter with some silicone.

Not the best way but it's what I had on hand.

I'm e-mailing LRS to see what they say about the boot adapter deal.

Installed pics as soon as the silicone sets up...

Just got a call back from Karson at LRS, says nobody else has complained to them about this issue and they are going to look into it and talk to the supplier and see what they can figure out.

In the mean time LRS is going to refund my $20 for the **** without my having to send it back to them.

So, guess I got a free **** but I'd rather it fit correctly.

Anyway, props to LRS for their great customer service!

It looks real good, especially for free!

For that chrome nut you're looking for, try a Harley-Davidson parts counter. I have found many specialty chrome fastners at their parts counter. Most love the Mustangs, and will search their nuts and bolts bins looking for what you need.

Hmmm...

A harley shop...

Hadn't even considered that, do they use metric fasteners?

There is a big fancy harley dealer on my way into Houston, may just stop by and see.

Although after having installed it now, you can barely see the nut under the ball.

Is that the premium shift boot? I have an MGW but still have the stock **** and want to change. I guess I need to start with the upgraded boot. But also have the "stock" threads on the MGW handle. Seems like a big hassle and $$ for minor improvement in looks.

Car is a base V6.

Looks are in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Personally like the classic look a LOT more than the stock ****.

Hassle? Yes, but really not much $$.

Especially when it was free!

As to If Harley has metric, yes. Even "America's apple pie and air cooled engined motorcycles have gone metric.

Unless someone gets on their hands an knees to view your shifter, It's not noticable at all.

If it's not a big hassle, remove the existing nut, find a metric bolt that screws into it, then take that to the Harley parts counter (or other hardware store). Keep that metric bolt in the center console; eventually you'll find the nut that suits you.

The more I look at it the less I think I am going to worry about the nut since you can hardly see it.

And as of yet, free only in word, as they haven't made the refund to my card so far.

Looks really good, lot better with the home polish job. I love tinkering with stuff to make it my own. Good job!

Thanks

Speaking of the polishing job, LRS used the pic I sent them even though I thought they might not since I polished the boot retainer.

bro, I have the mgw shifter too, but also bought both black and white mgw *****. No need to buy extra adapters or shift boots or nuts, etc. all fit right on. You remember my mgw thread, right?

Hey man, just So u know, i wasnt referring to your polishing job when I said "hassle for minor improvement in looks". I reread it and it seemed that way. Lol. I was referring to myself switching from stock ****/boot and "stock" MGW threads over to an aftermarket ball.

Your job looks great, I like it!

Burton, so they sell the 2 handle sizes but the "stock" threaded one (which I have) will fit aftermarket *****? But I also need to get a premium boot as well right? cause I have the CS
