Question Launching 2013 Auto 5.0 at the track...

I used to have a 2009 Challenger R/T. I used to brake rev it to about 1200rpm then launch.

With this 5.0 auto. What is the best technique with these? This is my 1st mustang ever and wanted to see how other guys with the autos are launching. From idle? Brake rev to 1000 or 1200? thanks.

Peak torque is above 4k, you're going to want to use as many RPMs that it'll hold.

IIRC the guys using stall converters range between 3000 and 4500 - but that is influenced by your diff ratio and tire size (i.e. drag radials or stock).

Five Oh Brian would be a good guy to ask:

Current Mustang: Sterling Gray 11 GT 5.0L Coupe with Brembo Package and 3.73's.
Current Mods: SCT Tuned, K&N Panel Filter, MM Dual Adjustable LCA's, FRPP GT500 Axleback Mufflers, MGW Shifter, BMR Driveshaft Loops.
Mustang Dyno Results: 409 rwhp / 382 rwtq. Best 1/8 Mile: 7.86 @ 91+. Best 1/4 Mile: 12.15 @ 115+. Bremerton Raceway, 5.11.12.

What everyone else said, lock the converter up and go.

Best method I've found with the automatic, is to load minimal revs against the brakes (but not idle). You have to load the driveline with some revs - maybe 1200 to 1500 rpm's max. Leave on the last yellow (or even second to the last yellow, depending on how stock/loose the suspension is) to cut good reaction times, and mash the gas to the floor to get the fullest 'hit' possible from the torque converter.

Good deal. That was pretty much the answer I was looking for and is pretty much the same method I used with my Challenger when I had it. I just didn't know if you could stall it to 2k but that would pull timing and get more tire spin I'm assuming. 1000-1250ish seems to be a good range to launch at. I'll try that when I go to the track, I appreciate it.

Unless you get a tune for it you won't be able to stall it above 2,000. There is a limiter built in and you will get up to 2,000 and it won't matter if you mash it to the floor, it won't go any higher. Makes it very difficult to do a burn out on the stock tune.
