JLT vs RX Catch Can - Results Part 2

Below are the images of the oil caught by the JLT and RX catch cans after 2 days at Watkins Glen.

230 track miles over the course of about 3.5 hours of driving.

JLT in line first, RX second. I did not switch mid-event as I'd hoped due to time and heat...

The RX will be 1st in line for my next outing of 2 days at Thompson.

The RX can caught MUCH more than the JLT as show in the images below. JLT <1mL, RX ~15 mL.

I will also add that I did an oil change prior to the event from Motorcraft 5w50 to Castrol 5w50. The oil had about 90 miles on it prior to the event, whereas the Motorcraft had more like 1500 miles on it when I ran my first data point at Thompson.

I was quite happy to see significantly less oil caught as a total, and very impressed by the MASSIVE difference in quantity caught in the RX vs JLT (15-20x more in RX).

So your going to do the RX first then the JLT next time?

I guess i'll hold judgement for a second round of testing.

Correct. I've got 2 data points now with JLT first and RX second, which is a bit of a statistical sample (small statistical sample...).

Will switch prior to the next outing. I have 2 days lined up for Thompson in early Sept and then a 3rd day in late Sept. Should support 2 or 3 more data points (depending if I check oil catching after day 1 or 2 of the first Sept outing)

Sounds like initial results at least show that the RX can is catching oil. That's good

I was surprised as I had seen maybe 2x the oil in the RX at the Thompson event. JLT caught essentially nothing during 2 days at Watkins. Happy I had the RX as well! Would have ingested that oil otherwise! Not much if any seems to be passing by the RX either.

Need to rig up the moroso can instead of JLT soon too... I know what will be for sale soon tho . On another forum maybe! Haha

Breathers are another great option with 0% chance of getting oil in your intake. That's what I use.

Looks like the JLT is not doing much. I'll be interested to see what the results will be with the RX first.

not trying to hijack this thread. Just wondering if breathers really do that, then what's the point to a catch can? breathers are essentially maintenance free where as a catch can does require you to drain it...

You running the $359 version? Between $199-359 is pricey, but you get what you pay for I guess. I would like to see how the RX compares to Bob's. I'm using JLT for my DD.

Technically breathers aren't emissions legal. And you do need to clean/replace them every so often too (so I have read)...

Monte77 is running a comparison against the Bob's right now. There is another thread on it - the Bob's seemed to catch basically everything, unlike my JLT!

I think that Bob's catch can is $150 or in that ballpark area... what's the RX can go for?

Depends on the model. I got the basic kit, matte black (no special color) and it was $115. I wish I got the Elite though, as the braided hoses look much better.

I think RX is charging along the lines of $250-300.

Based on the testing I've seen, I would never again buy a JLT, but I would have no issue buying a Bob's.

Interesting note for my car - I caught MUCH more oil (in both JLT and RX) when I was on Motorcraft 5w50 oil. It had sheared to 5w40 when I ran the testing (as shown through oil testing I performed almost immediately after that track day). The Castrol was brand spanking new and was (most likely) at 5w50 weight for the entire 230 track miles in the recent round of testing. I'm wondering if the thinner the oil gets, the more it is ventilated and caught in a good catch can?

That video is FRIGGEN AWESOME!! I love the HUD overlay on the video, wow technology these days!

But anyway, what's the real point of these? Seems a bit excessive. That much oil couldn't hurt anything

Ok, I can't take it anymore. Do you think EVERY mod is excessive? Don't you want to do ANYthing to protect your car, as insignificant as it seems to *you*?? Sheesh!!

I don't want crap going into my intake. Oil/blow-by, whatever. I want AIR in my intake. To be further mixed with fuel. That is it.
