Ice Cream, Death, and Navigation
Ice Cream, Death, and Navigation
Those of you who have a 2010-11 Mustang with the Electronics Package probably are aware that there are two classes of "points of interest". Some you can pull up through voice activation or through the touch-screen, some you can only do with the touch-screen. For instance, I can say "Find a Mexican Restaurant" and it will list the closest ones. But if I want to find an ice cream parlor, I can't do that through voice control, I have to do it through the touch-screen. A couple days ago, the computer miss-heard me (I don't remember what I asked for) and started listing funeral homes.
I can see that if there's a limit to how many POI's the memory for voice recognition can hold, you would have to choose what POI's are the most likely that someone will want spur-of-the-moment. I don't know about the rest of you, but typically if I'm going to a funeral home, I know it before I leave the driveway. Who decided that we'd be more likely to say "I need to find a funeral home" than to say "Boy, I could go for an ice cream cone"?
Maybe the programmer just watched National Lampoon's Vacation. He envisioned someone driving along saying "Aw shoot, grandpa just died. Good thing he wasn't the one driving. Well, we'd better find a funeral home we can drop him off at. Thankfully I can find one through voice activation so I won't have to pull over and park to push some buttons."

No, no, no, it's not got it wrong at all. It's saying "Ice Cream will KILL YOU, so I'll just take you straight to your destination."
I mean, really, it's a computer, and computers are all about logic. I think it did just fine.
/Mmmnn, delicious, deadly ice cream.
//Vanilla Cinnamon with Almonds, Strawberries, and Oreos.
///Now to the 'I'm craving...' thread.
