Trying out different engine oil is one thing, but the way things laid out here must be related to internal engine components. Lifters, Fuel Injectors, Pistons, Rods, valve train, low oil level, oil deposits. Again, I'm not a mechanic.

Still against taking my Engine apart, bad internals or whatnot. But if the noise doesn't go away even after the oil tryouts, I wouldn't have much of a choice. Well except maybe try to live with it. I don't want to, really.

 

Thanks for the bit of piece of mind. I am changing back to Motorcraft oil and filter when I go to the dealer on Monday...see if that does anything. I noticed that other people have had the tick that speeds up with a feathering of the throttle like mine. This is what had me the most concerned. I also noticed that my tick is not as loud as many of the videos out there. You can only hear it if you get close to the engine or if it echoes off of another car or highway divider in traffic. But it's barely noticeable. Maybe I had this all along and never noticed because maybe it is more prominent with the brand of oil. I guess I'll find out. Thanks again for the feedback and links.

 

One of the techs at work did an oil change on a GM SUV. I think it was an Equinox. I did not actually see or hear the car. But immediately after the oil change it was ticking like crazy. They did some research and found that this power train is prone to having oil passages get plugged from pieces of the oil filter. Cheap filter material can circulate in the oiling system and plug the screens in the cylinder heads. Not sure if something like this could also be an issue on the 5.0. But lots of folks mention it happens after oil change. Thoughts?

 

I'd just like to add another observation of my particular tick - You can't hear anything when the car is first turned over. There is no tick sound at all. It doesn't start making the sound until the car is fully warmed up.

 

This is interesting.

 

Mine has quieted down a lot and I continue to drive it hard at times with no ill effects. I will see if it comes back stronger after the next oil change.

You would think someone would be able to figure out the cause of this tick, how to fix the tick and how to prevent this tick. Wish I could but I suck! Lol

 

Mobil 1 is when my tick started. It went away after two Motorcraft changes in a row.

Yes, I'm now using Motorcraft 5W20 synthetic blend and tick did not come back after the second oil change with it.

If the tick reappears after the first change after going back to Motorcraft (mine did), just drive it normal and see what happens at the following change. That is when my did not come back.

I had the tick before my first oil change, and my 2 oil changes after that were with Motorcraft and I still had the tick. I used Mobil 1 with my 3rd, and my 4th change 3 weeks ago, and every time, tick came back loud. I have put about 300 miles on it now, with some hard driving, and the tick has quieted down a lot. It never goes away, but it becomes more sporadic and not as noticeable. The only thing I can say out of this is the car drives fine.

 

It's reassuring that your card are fine with this tick. The only thing that really has me concerned is how mine speeds up when I feather the throttle. You can hear it in the earlier video I posted. This only happens after the car has been warmed up. It's quiet as a mouse on startup.

 

Yes, it's the exact same thing most of us have, the tick only appears when it's warmed up. It's more pronounced around 1500-2000 rpms when accelerating, and you can hear it bounce off the wall, or other cars when you are next to it. At idle, it comes and goes randomly.

Let else know what your dealer says. I took mine in twice, the first one told me it's "normal" on Mustangs and it goes away after 7,500 miles (yea, sure, okay, never went back there again). The 2nd time I took it to another dealer, they agree it was ticking, but after looking at the car for a week and consulting with Ford, they said they couldn't find where it was coming from, they said they checked everything and said the engine was running normally.

 

I don't know if this contributes anything, but to me it sounds a little like an exhaust leak, backfire, or metal expansion / contraction. Maybe not so much coming from precision engine components.

When I first heard it on my car, I'd have guessed exhaust leak. But then again, I'd just changed the h-pipe.

 

Thanks, but the car is only 2 years old and the sound doesn't happen all the time. It started immediately after an oil change. It is clearly coming from the engine. But you're right about the sound being similar to metal expansion/contraction.

 

Update: I switched back to Motorcraft a few weeks ago. Ever since I switched back, the tick has been completely gone. It's not quieter or not noticeable- it's gone. I don't understand it, but don't really care. I'm just glad it's gone.
