It went away after the SC was installed, not that I think the SC had anything to do with it.

The noise was only noticeable at idle and went away as the revs went up. The tune for the supercharger did increase the idle speed, but I don't see how that impacts the noise since the increased idle speed is still well below the threshold that the noise would go away at.

I want to believe this, but I never had any kind of tick until I switched oil to full synthetic Mobil 1, at about 30k miles. Literally as soon as I got home from the oil change I heard it. I just want to have the peace of mind to know that nothing is being damaged... And next oil change I'm going back to the way it was with Motorcraft.

Precisely. The day when my tick came back (after I swore mine was gone with mobil1 5w30 lol...) had change in weather conditions. Temp drop. The Oil viscosity is all about the temperature. I already said our cars are sensitive, didn't I?

Curious, what's the idle speed with SC installed? The ticking kinks in at around 1.5-ish to 2-ish RPM.

I was telling a work buddy/fellow mustang owner about this today and we went outside at lunch so I could show him firsthand. I started up the car, let it warm up for about 10 minutes and there was no tick. I put the AC on at full blast, revved a few times up to 2k and still no tick. I even let it sit for 5 more minutes and repeated all of this and still nothing. The things that are different from this morning are the outside temperature (55 instead of 33) and I noticed it after about 30 of driving earlier this morning.

Well, it's back...I took a vid after I got home from my 1 hour commute. It definitely increases with the throttle. It's usually sporadic until I hit the gas a bit.

I have listened to your video about 50 times and I would like to share my experience with you, first your tick(as far as I can hear in the video) is not continuous, when I got the tick after my first oil change it was so prominent I ran back in to tell them they forgot to put oil in my car (they didn't though . The difference being the tick I had was absolutely continuous. (It always sounded like a loose rocker). This would continue for a few hundred miles then subside. One day when returned home from work and pulled into the driveway (just before I shut off the ignition I heard a knock sound (very similar to what I just heard in your video). I could only make this knocking sound between 700 and 900 rpm. I was able to reproduce this sound for the dealer mechanic. After they had it for a day they determined the play in my crank was out of spec and that it was causing the knock. I also had a small amount of metal on the JLT catch can as well as in the oil filter. Tasca Ford replaced the short block and I have had no tick/knock or any other abnormal sound since. I have always used Motorcraft 5w50 synthetic oil (track pack car) in both pre engine swap and post. I'm not trying to make you paranoid but if you agree with what I think I'm hearing in your video you can ask the dealer to check what was found in my car and also the oil will tell a tale as well. In the end I was told the wrong main bearing were installed at the factory and that's what started the whole problem for me. Till this day I still do not believe the tick I originally heard had anything to do with the crank problem. I only say this because so many people have the tick and no erratic knocking sound that sounded so similar in your video.

Ok well now I'm a little paranoid. I never had this before the recent oil change though. Not for 30,000 miles. Why all of a sudden? The tick is prominent, then it isn't...goes away. Then it comes back. It also doesn't always sound like this or even respond to throttle... Only occasionally. The rest of the time it's either not there or very random like the original video at the beginning of this thread.

If I could answer that I think I would be a pretty popular guy, as I stated before I got the tick at my first oil change but IMO I don't think that is what you have.. Audio in a YouTube clip can be subjective. I you at least agree that your tick is erratic?

Idle speed is about 725 RPM. My recurring post oil change tick always happened at idle and went away around 1200-1500 RPM. Now it seems to be gone (fingers crossed) so I'll stick with the Motorcraft 5W20 oil.

Here's a better video that more closely resembles the OP's sound. Sorry, I am no Spielberg with the filming. I get the sporadic tick in this video as well as a faster tick when I rev up to around 700-1000 RPM

Has anyone heard accounts of engine damage/failure as a result of driving with this tick for a long period of time without resolution? I need to get to work and my service appointment is still 5 days away. I am actually afraid to push the car past 3k rpm until I get this fixed. Does it even matter since the damage may already be done? Yeah, I'm going a little crazy over here...

Haven't heard of any engine breaking down due to the ticking, just lots of worrying folks...

It's just an annoying/embarrassing noise that develops on some cars and not on others. It's clearly not normal if it isn't present on new cars and some cars never have it. I bet Ford knows what it is, but figures it doesn't do enough damage to justify at TSB or recall, or even consider it a failure. A lot of dealers (including the two that I have been to) will ship it right out the door saying it's normal or no problem found. I've been driving mine with it for about 5k miles and nothing has happened so far. There are forum posts of people driving with the tick for over 50k miles and no problems. I bet Ford is thinking "Yes this noise isn't normal, and yes it might wear on XXX component slightly over time, but it won't cause catastrophic engine failure, so we're not going to consider it a problem". Wouldn't be surprised if a TSB comes out after these cars are out of warranty, so that dealers can fix it and not have to deal with customers complaining about it

I noticed you're in Charlotte too. One of my 2014's is making the tick noise too now at 21,000. I'm guessing it's a belt issue as well. What dealer did you take your car to. I purchased mine from Town & Country Ford on Independence.
