Hood struts and CF or fiberglass hoods. Are they too hard to close?

I have had my CF hood for a month now and have been thinking of buying the MMD or similar, hood struts. The body shop guys said it may be too hard to close the hood though, as it is considerably lighter than the stock aluminum hood. as it is now, the cf hood has to be dropped from alot higher to allow it to catch. no one is a fan of pressing down on the hood to close it lol

Has anyone noticed this?

Don't know about the hood struts, however I feel like you are shocking the hood less by pressing it down to latch it rather than dropping it from a high height to get it to latch.

A fiberglass hood is heavier then the stock aluminum hood. How much lighter is the CF hood then the stock hood? IIRC the stock hood weighs about 20 lbs. or so.

the CF hood is wAY too flexible to be pushing down on, repeatedly over time.

Interesting, I would think the CF is as rigid as the stock hood. I know my FG hood flexes but I gently push it down directly over the latch to close it.

I believe that Redline offers a strut kit for aftermarket hoods, might check them out.

Other than that, you could poke holes in it and put some ugly hood pins in it and do away with the latch.

great thanks for the tip. I'll look into them. If i have to i'll stick with the prop rod. The more I think about it, the stress of a strut system on the sides of the hood towards the windshield might be more of a stress point to consider.

If it were me, I'd keep the prop rod and not worry about the struts. Those hoods are too expensive to risk warping. I'd also go with hood pins, especially if you have any plans of going at high speeds.

I can tell you that ever since i put on those MMD struts on, i haven't banged the hood shut... i'm too scared on denting it as well.

what i've learned is to go with down force momentum. While the hoods coming down, I give it a little bit extra push when its about 6 - 8 inches from fully closing and can manage to close it on the first shot.

I have a fiberglass hood, I've heard that struts could bend a fiberglass hood, now my hood looks a little warped, is there any way to fix it?

Darren,

Good question and you should be good to go with MMD's struts! If you don't have our discount code shoot me a PM and I'll have it sent over for you asap.

Um... just a thought...

If it's WAY too flexible to be pushing down on... wouldn't that mean it's also WAY to flexible to be pushing *up* on, as the hood strut kit would do?

My mind at work, y'all. Laters.
