HomeLink upgrade
HomeLink upgrade
Is it possible to install a GenTex HomeLink mirror to replace the factory mirror in a vert? The dealer is giving me some BS line about convertibles being different. As far as I know, the factory mirror has nothing more than auto-dimming (which the GenTex also has) and the new mirror only requires power and ground connections. I found one for $199 with free shipping. That seems well worth it compared to clipping a door opener to the visor or jury-rigging some kind of switch to a hidden opener.
Do a search, someone here did this but lost the Sync Voice because the mic is part of the mirror assembly (at least for the coupe). If you never use Sync's voice command it may not be a problem for you.
The site has instructions on how to remove the mic and remount it with the new mirror. But it mentions that a navigation system makes this difficult or impossible... I have nav but I'm not sure why it would make a difference in the mirror.
replacement parts
Do the older mustang visors have the units? I was thinking about removing the homelink parts and installing them on the new visor? It would be nice to incorporate a unit into the rear view mirror base between the microphones.
This and the forced Entertainment Package to get climate control really irk me about the 2010+ Mustang. My previous car, a freakin' '06 Honda ACCORD (V6 admittedly), had both! I know it's apples & oranges to compare the cars, but how much could a Homelink transmitter possibly cost for Ford to have included on the 2011 GT? If Honda could include it on their $28K MSRP car in a much more highly competitive and cost-conscious sales category, why could Ford NOT include it on my $41K MSRP 2011 Convertible? Just askin'.
And on that topic, a convertible is the LAST kind of car in which you want a garage remote transmitter stuck onto the windshield visor (my only choice at the moment). REAL easy for someone to help themselves to it as they walk by if your top is down.

Take the visor clip off your GDO and put it down in the drivers door pocket with some velcro ... I put it here on my '94, '98, '04, and now my '11. Add some small strips of the soft velcro around the bottom of the remote so it does not vibrate and your done.
On the '11 it is not as nartural of a reach to push it like it was on the SN-95 cars, but I put is as far forward as possible which helps.

This might not work for a convertible but for coupes, its a great solution....

I took my small Sears GDO and painted it black and the buttons Grabber Blue and put it on the sun visor. Looks good to me. I looked at putting a Homelink transmitter in the overhead console but it would not fit in the 2010 with the security package due to the airbag off light.
My remote uses a 12V barrel battery so it's fairly easy to modify for hidden installation. You just solder a jumper across the push button switch terminals so it is always active and then connect wires from the remote's battery terminals to a momentary switch connected to a 12V power supply. The remote can be hidden under the dash pad and the switch can go anywhere convenient.
I've done this on several other vehicles but I'm trying to find something more factory looking this time.

It's not the airbag light that makes it not fit, it is the sensors for the EP I believe.

Think you mean "sensors for the SP" ... Security Package !!
