While it would be nice to have a 21st century suspension on a 21st century performance car -- vs the current 19th century setup -- hips are probably just stylistic, presuming they're even going to have hips on the '09.

Cool! That's a nice step forward in form. Now if they'd finally put in the IRS for a big step forward in function...

Here's hoping Rhumb....
it was mentioned that at least one variation will have it.
I just hope its not a super high end version (ie: GT500)
Give us the OPTION at least

Absolutely agreed!! Give us the option and let the "snobs" among us pony up for the IRS. I'll be the first "snob" in line

Can't argue with that even though I'm square in the LRA camp. Having a choice would be very welcome. Then again that makes you wonder? If Ford offered a IRS/LRA option would dealers load up on IRS cars if it was an extra cost option. Hmmmmmm.......
[way back machine to 1992]
Me: Hey, I'm looking for an LX notch with no ac, no radio, no power anything, 5 speed and the optional axle ratio.
Dealer: Man, we dont have anything like that.
Me: Well can you order it?
Dealer: Yeah, it'll cost 16k and you gotta put down a 30% deposit, BUT! I have this fully loaded LX with automatic for 14k
Me: .......
Dealer: .......
Me: Uh, bye

I thought the '05 chassis was already designed to accomodate IRS.

There is a lot of conflicting info on this.
The most credible info. says that the last minute rush job to reduce cost and design out IRS & go with the SRA was done in such a way that it is now very difficult to put IRS back in without very costly design changes and tooling changes.
I am not holding my breath wating for IRS to appear on the Mustang.

The D2C chassis was designed with the IRS first, and in mind.
The SRA was changed after.

That's what I said.
But I also said the last minute changes for the SRA were done in a way to make it very difficult to put IRS back in it.

You posted JUST before I did...quick on the draw.
Could you explain why it would be difficult? or is this just hearsay?
Considering the GT500 had it in the car well after the V6/GT were already on the road with the SRA.
The change was made 'yet again' to keep the cost and weight down.
They said for the ammount of improvement over the 3link, it wasn't worth the money in the GT500.
The chassis was designed for it, and remember its not going to be JUST a mustang chassis. D2C was designed for more than 1 car.
At least it was planned that way. With 'Way Forward' those other car( s ) might have been put on hold or canned altogether.
Ford will do it when they need or have to.
They already have the R/D into the IRS that was suppose to be in the car in the first place.

I think I remember that the mustang does not share the same chassis as the rest of the cars it was based on. While the original intention was to reuse the existing chassis, Hau Tai Tang said that so many modification were made for the S197 and to make the SRA perform properly that it was essentially an all new platform (in one of the original 05 forums). The original Lincoln/Jaguar platform was changed significantly for the mustang, so it wasn't designed to have IRS from the get go. Also, I don't remember anywhere that it stated that the GT500 was originally built with IRS. From an engineering aspect I thought they decided it would be too costly.
Also, I read in the latest Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords a write up on the install of IRS for the 05-06 mustang. It was a significant install with tons of bracing and tubular steel. Cutting had to be done to the frame and other areas. If the chassis were designed for IRS you would think the aftermarket would have already capitalized on the expected ease of install and engineering.
Of course this is all if my memory serves correctly, which lately I am questioning.

You're thinking of the Dew-Lite platform that was going to be used, then wasn't. (Lincoln)
Then the D2C chassis was designed.
IT DID have an IRS from the beginning, and was swapped out last minute due to budgetary constraints.
...sorry .. .i mean because thats what the core audience wanted
The GT500 was tested with an IRS and SRA
They deemed that the IRS would add weight and wasn't enough of an improvement to add the weight/cost of the IRS.
So they stuck with the SRA.

Just don't bring up the whole 'Control Blade' Suspension thing...
That makes a lot of guys get steamed...
That was the rumour when Blue Oval stated that it was using the CBlade (Focus part) and that the mustang was going to ride on the Focus platform

Actually, from what I have seen of The Way Forward thus far my guess would be that it is far more likely that other D2C based cars would be getting the green light again under this program rather than cancelled. Thus far under The Way Forward the 3.5L has finally shown up and with more power than expected, that same 3.5L and awd are both finding their way into the MkZ as standard equipment (std awd being the wow factor here for me), the Hurricane/Boss V-8 program is back on line and the 4.4L diesel V-8 planned for the F-150 and suv's appears to be getting the fast forward treatement. While it is certain that not all of this progress is due to The Way Forward the revival of the Boss V-8 program certainly seems to be as does the importance placed on the Lion 4.4L V-8. In fact, I have yet to see anything undesirable come from Mr. Fields' Way Forward.
