GT500 keeps the Tremec tranny
While the new V6 and V8 engines are being coupled with the new MT-82 manual transmission, I notice the 2011 GT500 is keeping the Tremec. I would have thought that if it is time for a tranny
upgrade then they all would change or is the MT-82 also a Tremec variation?

MT-82 is not a Tremec, its a Getrag.
The T6060 is a tremec and is heavy duty, hence why its in the cars its in (viper, GT500, Vette etc)
its probably a bit overkill for the Mustang GT and for sure the V6.

In the 5.0 magazine article, it is noted that the new 6-speed is produced in a Ford-Getrag joint venture arrangement. I am not 100% certain, but the torque capacity of the new 6-speed doesn't appear to be robust enough to handle the supercharged 5.4L's output.

Then why drop the Tremec from the 2010 if it could be better? I guess there are a number of possibilities none of which have anything to do with quality but upgrades versus business acumen. I just thought it interesting on somebody's part to tout the new 6 speed for the V6/V8 but leave the old 6 speed in the GT500.

If I had to guess (besides torque capacity) the M6 Tremec might not have had a gear spread suitable for the V6 and GT engines, especially with its double OD.
Where the V6 and GT engines might labor behind the tremec, the 5.4 S/C by dint of its larger displacement and supercharger is better able to take advantage of a wide ratio double OD trans.
There is also the matter of weight and drivetrain efficiency, the Getrag is lighter and may also be more effcient in the transfer of power (due to components not having to cope with 480+ ft/bs and a 3900 +/- curb weight).

The Tremec in the GT500 is the TR6060 and has nothing in common with the POS 5 speed 3650 found in 2010 and older Mustang GT's. It is rated at 610 lb/ft of torque and there is no need/reason/way to "upgrade" it. It is MUCH stronger than the new MT-82 in the V6 and 5.0 and that is why it stays.
Comparing the 6 speeds in the V6/5.0 and the GT500 is apples and oranges.
Once you boost your 5.0 you will be wanting the TR6060 for sure.
