GT500 axle backs with Boss side pipes

I know there is at least one other member on here with this combo. I have the Boss Side pipes (love them). I installed the forum darling GT500 axlebacks yesterday and...

I can't tell a difference.

Anyone else had this experience?

I've got my GT500 axle backs on right now, and the boss side exhaust gets here in about a week. I was install then and go from there. I HOPE I can tell a difference. Otherwise I will be selling those GT500's

You might not be able to tell from the driver's seat thanks to the side pipes but the GT500s are unmistakably louder than stock. I bet everyone else notices that change.

I have the same combo but i did the mufflers first.

I remember driving windows down when gt500ab's were put on. They are great sounding axlebacks, (even better when heard from outside) but like any other axlebacks, they are on 'back' of the car.

One of the reasons why I went boss quad exhaust route is exactly because of this. These are on side of the car, closer to the ear.

Assuming you already have the restrictor plates out, now its even louder. Exhaust note from the back? Hmm.

I then, removed the resonators. This made gt500 ab's sound a bit angry. Might want to give it a try. Or put louder axlebacks. But(!) I suggest let someone drive/rev your car first and hear how your car sounds from outside.

Thanks for your replies. I do have the restrictors out and I'd bet you all are right about each of the things you said.

First off, I think the car is definitely loud enough; I was looking for a fuller note at about the same volume. So thanks Pony Muscletang, but I think I'll leave the resonators in.

Second, I do need to hear someone drive my car while I'm not in it. I'd bet it does sound different outside. One thing I noticed before is the Boss pipes are not as noticeable outside the car as they are to the passengers. I bet it's the exact opposite with the axlebacks because of their position and direction.

I loved the difference listening to YouTube vids and was expecting a change in tone inside the car...but I'd bet the Boss pipes drown it out.

I might install the restrictors again just to check out what the axlebacks really sound like.

Oh and Moejoe, don't forget what a PITA it is to get those axlebacks now. I wouldn't sell them unless I hated them.

Wish we were local, I have yet to encounter any Stanger with this setup. Wouldn't it be awesome to discuss/compare/share ideas by hearing each others' exhaust notes? Sigh.

I have a theory that since the side pipes are placed before(obviously) the axlebacks, the flow/pressure gets separated along the way (to the sides) therefore the sound coming out to the back (via axleback) is not as strong compared to axleback alone.

Thus, 'Louder' axleback maybe required in order to achieve the 'Fuller Note' that you are wanting to get. Make sense huh?

Anybody with Boss Quad and different axleback ( other than gt500's) here?

The restrictor is just a plate with a small hole drilled in it. It is apart of the Boss Quad Exhaust and is easily removed. The resonators are in the over the axle pipes. They can be cut out with new pipe welded in or replace the pipe all together. The stock GT500 OTA pipe has no resonators so that is one option.

I have the Borla S-types with the Boss side pipes. It was louder with the side pipes but the main difference was bringing the sound forward. I hated having it all coming from the rear.

Only videos I have. I need to get some better ones soon (and possibly a better camera man! lol)

Nice. Borla's are pretty loud, can you still hear them well over the side pipes?

It all seems about equal to me. Neither is really louder than the other. Restrictor plates are also removed btw.

I think its the order you've done them... I did the GT500 ABs first (nice improvement), and then added the Boss quad side-pipes (pure heaven).

Together, they are perfect...

Update for you all... some friends and I went to check out the new mufflers over lunch, I had a friend drive my car around the parking lot and from the outside I can tell a slight but noticeable difference.

But I would like to go on record saying that the change is pretty subtle with the unrestricted Boss pipes. So anyone thinking about doing both (assuming you can get both), you MIGHT be happy with just the stock GT mufflers. The GT500s are definitely racier sounding, but I think the slight refinement in the GTs tone along with the rolled tips makes it more "street," if you catch my drift.

In other words, if you're the type where your exhaust could theoretically be "too loud," you are kind of at the limit with both. If you're a "louder and nastier is better" type, you won't be disappointed.
