I've got 4,000 mile and will be changing my oil at 5,000 and go every 5,000 thereafter. I am sticking with Mobile 1 5W-30 (not 5W-20 as Ford suggests).

Any objections?

 

Also, should I continue with Ford oil filter, Mobile 1 or K&N?

 

I like your style there bro but I change my oil at 7500 mile intervals. I too use 5W 30 oil ( not that 5W 20) and for a base III synthetic, I been using Super Tech fully synthetic with Napa gold filter.

If I was using Base IV true synthetic oil I would use Mobil One extended performance.

 

Go with Napa Gold bro. Awesome filters.

 

I would go with every 5k miles for peace of mind if nothing else if I were planning on keeping the car a long time, and use the OEM Ford filter.

 

Well, you can't hurt the engine by changing the oil too many times. Lol. The 11 plus stangs were designed to go 10,000 mile oil change intervals under normal driving conditions and on Motorcraft 50/50 blend oil. Unless the OP is regularly tracking their car, 7500 miles is short enough for oil changes. On top, the OP is using a Mobil 1 , base III synthetic oil which is better oil than the 50/50 blend so 5,000 miles is way too soon to throw away perfectly great oil plus the filter is still good.

 

Totally agree. I got my oil changed at the dealer. I went with full syn, and the sticker they put on my windshield stated that my next oil change should be 7500 miles later. And that's being very conservative.

That is considering you got fully synthetic oil and if you drive your stang under normal driving conditions. Very conservative. Heck one could use conventional motor oil and change it 7500 miles under normal driving operations and be fine..

I would stay with the Motorcraft filter just in case warranty work is ever needed. IMHO.

Agree on the 5-30. Read lots of threads here and elsewhere about thinner and thicker oils. But I did my first change with 5-20 (mainly bc I hadn't researched deeply yet) and all future will be with 5-30.

As far as intervals, I can't speak to the miles. I only put about 4000 miles a year. I also use Amsoil SS. The quality of that oil would last at least 10k miles. But if I waited for that in FL heat, that would be almost 3 yr old oil in there at each change interval. Lol. So I go once a year. I still use Amsoil bc I do drive hard with a decent amount if track time.

My first change was around 4000 miles only because it again had been about a year.

Filter wise I've always liked napa gold, it is made by Wix. But if I'm not near a napa I'll get a royal purple filter. They are very good. M1 isn't bad but has thicker than average media. Obviously Amsoils filter is great too but sometimes my place with Amsoil oil is out.

 

Nice to see dealers actually getting with the times. Last time I did a dealer change (YEARS ago) I put in full syn and the sticker still said 3/3000.

 

Um...this is beating a dead horse if you are one of the guys that is like "Ford says to so that means it's the best." Because there is no hope to educate you.

But if you are seriously asking, 5-20 is recommended by ford bc it gives slightly better fuel economy than 5-30 would. They need these 1's and 2's here and there to booster their CAFE average.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean it is the best for the car. Keep in mind that ford makes money on repairs out of warranty. So if you think they have your best interests in making your motor last you're nuts.

Bottom line is that 5-20 is too thin. Especially if you drive it even remotely hard.

 

Disagree Kona. A conventional oil at 7500 miles of very conservative driving would be sludged all to hell. With a true base iv syn oil, 7500 is a good middle ground to be safe, regardless of driving habits.

 

5W 30. Winner, heck yeah. I would do my first oil change around 2,500 miles then 7,500 miles there after that.

 

Well, you could be right but I can tell you my wife's 2005 Mazda MPV van has manufactures recommended oil change intervals at 7500 miles and that's on conventional oil. I use a base III synthetic oil for the van and still do 7500 mile oil change intervals.

 

I'd say go by the Oil Life Meter for your first change. Wait till ~30% oil life and change then. I agree with 5W-30. I have a Track Pack, and Ford recommends 5w-50 for mine. It's the same motor as the base GT, so I'm not sure why they recommend thicker oil. My best guess would be they expect the car will be driven harder and thicker oil offers more protection?
