Going to order my 2012

Well finally after waiting almost a year and a half I can go order my 2012 5.0 next week. I have a couple questions to ask if yall don't mind.

2012 Mustang GT Premium
Grabber Blue w/ 401A GB accent
HIDs and Security Package
Spoiler Delete
18" Polished Aluminum wheels

MSRP: $35,705
Invoice: $32,886

Trying to keep it under $35k if possible.

I am bringing my dad with me so hopefully he will be able to help. I want to get as close to invoice as possible. I have a $500 off coupon that I got when I got my last ooil change in Feb. that I want to use. Should I get a set price and then give them this or give it to them before we start talking.

Do I have to get a set price now or does this happen when the car comes in?

What is the best way to way to go about doing this?

I am pretty friendly with the staff over at the dealership and they all know me on a first name basis. The fleet mgr. gave me a price one day and I can't seem to find the paper but it was pretty close to what I wanted.

I am aware that I still need to add ttl in.

Thanks everyone for the help.

You shouldn't give them more than 1000.00 over invoice. 1000.00 over invoice is more than enough to cover their overhead. Make sure you negotiation the out the door price and not just the price of the vehicle. Figure your out the door price, let's say 38,000 out the door and tell them you'll give them 37,000 out the door. This gives you a 1000.00 to bend on.

You must negotiate price before placing the order. No matter how well you know them if you order without a negotiated price they will try to jack it up when you go in to pick up your car. Heck. They might even still try it anyway.

And $1k over invoice is more than enough as was said above. And that's before your $500 rebate coupon provided it's still valid at the time you take delivery. But negotiate your price and then tell them you have it. It comes from Ford and not from them. It's not out of their pocket, but they will try to show it as a reduction on their end before hand if you do show it early.

I paid invoice for my 2011 GT. (well, 500 under plus 500 processing fee....)

Then I got 1250 back in coupons. Awesome.

How about X-plan through your employer or joining MCA? That is approximately 200 over invoice and they limit your dealer BS fees to $75. Otherwise, they will try to tack on a $600 dealer fee, if your state allows it. Good luck!

I think the $50 membership fee to join the MCA group is an absolute steal; even if you join for nothing else but to qualify for the X-Plan price... JMHO!

X-plan is nearly $200 over the invoice total. Many dealers (including the one I work for) routinely special order vehicles (including Mustang GT's) for just $99 over the invoice total, so X-plan isn't always the best deal. Also, in our state (WA), dealer doc fees are capped by law at $150 and it's still negotiable, so it's easy to get an awesome deal close to the invoice total if you find the right dealer.

Another avenue for a great deal for anyone who is a Costco member, is to use the Costco Auto Program. Costco pre-negotiates awesome deals with their member dealers - and it is typically a flat markup that hovers near the invoice total (sometimes below the invoice total!). And you still get any public rebates that you qualify for, so you end up paying well below the invoice total after rebates.

Wow, my dealer's policy here in Virginia is a $499 "documentation" fee, which x-plan limited to $75. So the x-plan was my best avenue here, but it's amazing how many different financial levers are out there in just a simple car sale transaction.

That is INSANE. Virginia isn't that big can't you drive out of state and purchase a vehicle. 500.00 for a 15 minute is criminal.

I've know of dealers that charge $650 for the Doc fees and there are probably higher. But its not insane or criminal and doesn't impact smart shoppers in any way. Same for legal caps in some places; since the dealer sets the lowest they will go on a sale, if the law says they can only charge x for the Doc, they just adjust the amount they will take for the car itself to compensate.

Its true the dealers will catch some buyers with the higher Doc fees but its no different than selling a car for MSRP if the buyer will agree. Either way, the buyer lost money for not doing their homework or not using common sense.

Higher Doc fees are probably actually worse for the salespeople than the buyer because they shift more of the total received by the dealer (which will be the same with a smart buyer no matter what the fees are) away from the price of the car and therefore reduce the commissions the salespeople get.

Well after adding in the EP the offered me $39,500 out the door. I called my salesperson up and told the $39k even and we got a deal. Waiting to here back hopefully in the morning. At $39 it is $500 over invoice including ttl. Im happy if it goes through.

Not necessarily. If it is a vehicle the manager is willing to take into their stock, they will sometimes allow you to order with putting anything down. Depends on what you want though. I suppose you could possibly negotiate with them to take it into their stock, if you are unwilling to pay what they're asking....anywho, I have a 2012 Kona Blue on order right now, and a new 2011 Sterling Grey in the driveway

Ordered a "2011", but my dealer was so clueless he didn't know the '11 line was stopped and the '12 line was starting. The manager decided to not make me put down any cash due to it being a setup he deemed to be easy to sell off the lot. No downpayment. After watching the traffic on the forums, and losing much sleep, I decided to go for an '11 SG, since I was not committed monetarily to the '12. Also will be going overseas for a year soon, that was also a big consideration. Meanwhile, the '12 is still being built and shipped as usual. I have since told the salesman that I will not be able to take delivery of the vehicle. Little does he know I bought another stang at his competetor's lot (they offer better deals there, and other reasons) across town. I'll tell him when the car arrives.
