Question Which gears did you choose and why?

Thought this subject might get some interesting replies... Please try and specify which engine and which transmission you have as well. Thanks.

I thought we already had a thread like this?

Anyways, I'll bite. You're probably Ford trying to do some market research

I have a 5.0 w/ manual and standard 3.31 gears. I don't track my car so there was no need for me to shell out the extra $400 to pick up a tenth in the 0-60.

3.55 for a more useful 2nd at the autocross, and to be able to finish the 1/4 in 4th even after some performance mods.

3.73. Figured it would be most awesome. Lots of debate going back and forth on whether 3.73 or 3.55 is better. I personally very much enjoy my 3.73s, and just got them based on the general recommendation that they'd be best for accelerating, going from a stop, and incidentally also the more useful one in stop and go traffic. A lot of the time I can just nonchalantly cruise behind the guy in front of me and let him pull ahead while I just chill in 1st or 2nd. He'll usually stop about 500 feet ahead of me and I'll just take my time getting up to him. Then he starts moving again by the time I get there a lot of the time.

Really I just got them because they were the deepest gearing option Ford offered stock and I didn't care about the gas savings. This is meant to be my fun car, I wasn't going to destroy the feeling by letting sensible concerns like "money" interfere with it. It just so happens it's also my daily driver, but that's just how I roll.

I went with 3.73's because Ford offered it. If they offered 4.10's I woulda got those instead. Back in the late 80's/early 90's we always changed the gears in the Mustangs and 3.55 were weak in those cars. I ran 4.10's in all 3 of my Mustangs then and loved it. I know this is a different car and different transmission but the thrill is the same.

That said, I am seriously considering a Ford Racing or Roush Supercharger for my 2011 GT and if I do that, then I might change the gears to 3.55's.

3.55's on order, with the manual trans. Splittin' the difference between the 3.31 and 3.73 -- best of both worlds?

I stayed with the base 2.73 gears on my 3.7L V6 M/T for maximum MPG's ... I drive 400+ miles a week for work and wanted to do it on one tank of gas (something I was never able to do with an SN-95).

I have accomplished this goal as my ave. MPG's since I 1st broke into 30+ MPG (around 2k miles / now at around 8k) is 30.51 MPG. I have even made it into my garage at the end of the week a few times without the low fuel light coming on yet (50 miles to "E"), which is pretty impressive.

Car is plenty quick off the line ... have no trouble getting rubber out of both 2nd & 3rd gear, but I can see where the 3.31's would be nice coming out of a turn when your in 2nd gear.

I got 3.31's with my V-6 automatic. I'm happy with them but would have gone with 3.55 if offered as an option. My engine is only doing around 1,735 r.p.m. at 60 m.p.h.

I had the 4.10's installed because the 3.31's that came with my vert were terrible on the highway. At least for my driving habits. They are great if you can cruise in the 75 - 80 range. but I do most of my driving is 55 - 70 range and found myself not even using 6th gear. You could not even pass a yugo at that speed without downshifting to 5th.

I figured if I was going to pay to install the gears I should go for the 4.10. I have not been disappointed so far. I love them totally transformed the car. 1- 4 chirp no problem. And I haven't even gotten the tune yet

thinking of upgrading to 3:73's.. should be ok for daily use ,right? how much higher in rpm's say for ex: at 70mph..Also, should i let the dealer install or give to tuner when he does other work to it? wouldn't the dealer install be covered under warranty?

Dealer install would be covered yeah, though they tend to be expensive. Can't hurt to get a quote though.

70 in 3.73s would be 2112 RPM
70 in 3.15s would be 1784 RPM

3.73 in my GT...This is my first performance car, and from the start I wanted to do some HPDEs and autox...

Decision wavered a long time between 3.55 and 3.73, but ultimately I worried that I might get bored of 3.55 and want a switch...I figured that 3.73 would be the most gear I'd want in a daily driver and I'd never have to swap it out for anything else...

So far I've been very happy...

3.15s? What car comes with those? Do you have an idea of the numbers for the 3.31s?

3.73

They were fun when I test drove the car. They hurt your MPG a bit, but I feel the power and faster acceleration. I use the car as DD so I don't really mind it too much. I catch myself going from 1st gear to 3rd gear/4th in the city and the response is still pretty good.

Automatics come with 3.15s standard, with 3.31s optional. It's pretty easy to compute this for any gear ratio, just divide the RPM by the gearing that number is in, then multiply by the gearing you want that number to be in. 70 with 3.31s becomes about 1887 RPM.
