I am waiting on my 2012 5.0 GT Auto to arrive. It has 3.15s. I am totally clueless as to what the ratios mean. What do lower #s mean/provide vs higher? If I understand this correctly, lower equals better MPG while higher equals better/faster take off. This is my DD in a city. While I totally dont mind have good MPG, I would also like the ability to punch it and take off.

3.31 w/ manual - because I commute 98% highway for a ways and you never know the price of oil.
If you have 3.15 gears, the driveshaft will spin 3.15 times to the wheels' 1, so 4.0 gears will mean the driveshaft has to spin more to get the same speed as a higher ratio, but requires less "work" so you accelerate faster. My '65 had 4.11 gears with a tired Chevy 230 inline six and I could light up the tires all day with a whopping top speed of 64 MPH floored & screaming.
Its a trade-off either way you go. The higher ratio won't dissapoint!!! (IMO)

You could upgrade to 3.55's and be just fine. Still good gas mileage especially with an auto and very good at take-off. Get a tune and a CAI and you'll be set.

I have 3.73's in my car right from the factory. After my 97 cobra having 4.10's, I had to do the 3.73 at a bare min. I love the way the feel but man I do miss my 4.10s
