Gas Milage on my 2011 V6
Hi,
First post. This is the first Mustang I have ever owned. It is a 2011 V6 automatic, with the 3.31 gear ratio option, and the stock 18" wheels. I realize that the higher ratio results in lower MPG. However, I am getting no more than 20-20.5 MPG per tank (87 octane). I have had it for almost 2 years now, and this is the mileage I have seen since owning it. I travel 20 miles to work, 3/4 of which is highway miles. If I make a long trip (Orlando to Jacksonville e.g.), I will get about 23.5-24MPG. Granted, I don't drive like a granny, but the MPG seems very low. Is this normal for that configuration?
Thanks

I wouldnt fret but next time your going around 40 for a pretty good stretch of steady driving, reset your mpg meter and watch as the number settles in. Ive ended up around 24-25 avg mpg afterwards so it can definitely help

My stock 2014 V6 convertible averaged 27.9 for all of an overnight getaway that covered about 450 miles - a good part of those on highway. It averaged 30 on the last stretch of highway miles (about 130 miles) - most of which was two lane rural highways with speeds around 60.

Sounds like if you want better mileage you need to modify your driving style.
My '12 2.73 manual car did as well as 35.7 mpg on a all highway trip and the overall average during the time I owned it was over 29 mpg.
The 3.31 gear should actually help the city mpg but it really is all in the way you drive.

35,000 miles driving my GT and I'm averaging 21.6 overall. I had a 2012 V6 rental for three weeks before I bought my car and averaged 26.5 in mixed driving. I'm not a granny driving my car, but you must just drive the heck out of it. Try a few of the common hypermiling tricks (http://ecomodder.com/forum/EM-hyperm...ecodriving.php) and see how you do. Resetting the MPG readout often is a great way to see how your driving affects your mileage too.

I'll tell you what...you'll be surprised at how just driving 10mph faster destroys gas mileage. Before my SC on my V6, I'd average around 20 miles to the gallon. After my SC install, I noticed my gas mileage shot up 5-6 MPG. At first I was attributing it to the SC. But then I realized that I consistently drive about 10mph slower than I used to on my highway driving in order to stay out of boost while just DD'ing. Slow down for your commute and you'll be shocked at what it does for mileage.

it will cost you around 1k if you do it yourself. It is very simple even a chevy owner could do it.

Might as well throw in here. The absolute BEST gas mileage I've got so far from my '13 V6/3.31 is 15.5 mpg. This is about 90% city, and I've been driving at <2k rpm to get that. It's not even really city, more like town in that there's not much low speed driving and no stop-and-start type like in heavy traffic, and speeds are mostly 40-50 mph.
I often drive at to me ridiculously low rpms (1000-1200) in an attempt to see how much the mpg varies. If I drive more normally (for me) I get ~13 mpg. I am used to high-revving/low-torque motors. Probably most/all of this is due to me, not the car...car seems to be working perfectly.

^ It does seem awfully bad for a lightly driven V6. I have also wondered if the computer is screwy; hope they adjusted the computer or whatever, if it's needed, for 3.31 gears when I didn't order the PP i.e. as a non-package option. I ordered my car July 9, took exactly 3 months to pickup day, you sure got yours fast...

And if you want better mileage than 14.1 or 15.5 all you have to do is change your driving style.
The V6 will lug the car around at 1000 rpm in 6th gear at cruise speed, this will boost the mpg's. Shift early, before 2000, get it into 6th as soon as possible. Drive it easy and it will do better. May not be the most fun or exciting way but it's the best gas mileage way.

^ I do drive as you describe. Now. Except, and this may be the killer for my mileage: I am admittedly a bit aggressive in the 1-2 range, from a stop, until I get up to at least 40mph. This is where the gas is getting sucked, and where most of the fun is in town driving. I didn't choose this car for good mileage exactly, and I'm not bothered by what I'm getting. But it could get quite expensive if I had to drive this car to the city every day (retired) with our relatively high gas prices.
