5LHO: looks like our cars are designed plenty strong. I remember I saw a newer convertable with everything gone including the engine and the drivers area still intact with driver unhurt. Glass roof, regular roof or no roof guess it comes down to the luck of the draw.

It's way worse than it looks (if that's possible). The motion into the tree was stopped by the frame rail and (oddly) the H pipe. That hit slammed me into the centre console's edge and broke my ribs. The impact snapped the crossmember on both sides so the driveline was hanging free from the motor mounts. Wheels and tires jacked all four corners. There was no longer a single straight panel on the car.

A passenger would have been very likely toast as the seat bottom was crushed in about 50% of the former distance between the door and the centre console.

I did pop my own belt, crawl through the broken side glass and walk to the kerb to await services. I've always been lucky like this and I am grateful for it, considering the number of near-misses I've had in my life.

Insurance let me remove the blower kit, which was fine and I decided to sell it on, rather than put it on my new car. I put the jug on that car, just for fun at the dragstrip.

I love it. I miss it. And I wish they still had it available.
You dummy! I told you not to get rid of it.

Well

It paid for college for my oldest

Although she will probably just get married and be a housewife and pop out kids. But hey if I hadn't sold it she would have never met the guy at college right?

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. It'll soothe the pain from her not meeting that millionaire at a bar somewhere in Houston

I've spoken to some track day operators here in Texas about it and some of them won't let glass-roof cars run in the higher classes for insurance purposes--not the owner's, the event provider's. We can all say that the glass roof is stronger, better for rollovers, etc., but the event providers aren't interested in being a guinea pig for that experiment a lot of times. They are restricted to the same runs that convertibles are and that largely depends on the driver's classification.

I'm happy to report that my local tracks near Seattle view my '14 glass roof as a regular coupe, so I'm not subjected to the rules for convertibles. I run the car in the pro class and it turns 11.50's in the 1/4 mile. Next safety item I have to consider is the 6 point rollbar once it goes 11.49 or quicker.

This is why I got a glass roof instead of a convertible.

And yeah, it can withstand a good hail storm, even when my friend's skylight could not.

Good! Consider yourself lucky. I know a few glass-roof owners that are less than happy about some of the restrictions placed on them and their cars.

I sold my Shelby for the same reasons. Too many track restrictions for glass roof. At least that's what I tell myself today.

+1. Glass roof better be an option in the next few years if Ford wants me to buy an S550 or S650 model Mustang!

This. But I think I've resigned to the fact that they're not bringing it back.

Just say no to plastic roofs. They just don't last.

I'm hopeful for the S650. I don't think it's gonna happen on the S550

Heck while we're at, why not just go all out and request that Ford offer a carbon fiber roof option
