First time oil change, what will I need ?

No this is not my first time changing oil in a car but my first time in my Mustang.
The reason I ask is all my other vehicles were trucks so I could just crawl under and change the oil with out any ramps or a jack and of coarse I own neither of them so ill need to barrow some from the neighbor down the street. So what will work best for my Mustang a ramp or find a floor jack ? I have like 7100 miles on my car so so I'm going with Amzoil because a freind of mine is a rep for them and I can get the oil and filter at cost.

you might need a filter wrench. Sometimes the factoys filters are on super tight.

If you rely on the jack only to support the car while under it....add me to your insurance because some day it will get you. I suggest a set of ramps or jack stands.

good call Pete jack stands. I said use the jack because I don't know where the drain plug is and some times you can get more drain oil out by setting the car back down on the ground.

You will need:
  • 8 quarts oil of your choice
  • Filter
  • Ramps/jack stands
  • 10 MM socket + wrench for taking off the engine cover
  • Open ended wrench for the drain plug
  • Funnel
  • Gallon size plastic bag (for putting over the filter as you take it off to catch the inevitable oil mess)
It's pretty easy compared to most cars - enjoy!

Do we void our warranty or is there anything wrong w/ changing our own oil? I already hate taking it in because they used a torque wrench to tight my oil drain... GRR

You can also buy MC 5-20w synthetic blend oil 5qt jug for dirt @ WM.

Of course not, just keep your receipts and make sure you change it when the car tells you to or before. As for using a torque wrench on the drain plug, that's what you should do - 19 lb/ft.

No, you do not void your warranty for changing your own oil.

Do you use a torque wrench on your drain hole bolt? Lol

I sure do. Not sure why it's funny but anything with a specific torque setting on a car should be torqued to that setting.

I've changed oil more times than I can count, on more cars than I can count in my lifetime and have never used a torque wrench on a drain plug and have never had one come out, strip out, or round off.

Maybe...but it sure doesn't hurt to take the extra 30 seconds to use the torque wrench and make sure I don't overtighten it.

You will need 9 QTs if you have the track pack. It takes 8.5 because of the engine oil cooler.

Industrial paper towels
Simple green to wipe up any spills on the ground.

Luckily I was smart enough to epoxy my garage floor when I bought my new house a couple years ago so stuff just wipes right off.

Good luck

Thanks for all the replays. I guess Ill have my oil next week and I knew I was going to have to buy a new oil pan that will hold 8 quarts. When I had my CBR1000 and ZX10 I always did my own work even oil changes. I hate to pay money for something I can do my self and know its done right.

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I've been changing my oil ever since my dad taught me as a little kid, and I've never thought to do that... My least favorite part of the job has always been the filter, because of the inevitable drips/mess.

I take it the Mustang doesn't have a crush washer on the oil drain plug? My last car did, and I was a real bummer to get the oil drained and then realize that I didn't have a fresh washer for the plug.

No crush washer. I like the PIG form-a-funnel too. Picked one up from Amazon when I ordered my Fumoto valve.
