first RWD car, strange sound from rear

When i am driving along anywhere from 20 on up mph i can hear coming from the back a faint mechanical whine. I am familiar with the transmission whine but this sounds more like a high pitched meshing or almost scraping but not quite. It is pretty soft if the windows are down even at only 30mph i cant hear it. I thought maybe it could be the rear diff? or related to the axle? something normal i just have not experience because i have never owned RWD before. any thoughts would be appreciated. My guess is its nothing but i figured i would throw it out here before engaging the dealer service and such. thanks in advance

So it starts at 20mph, does it get louder or go away at a certain speed?
If it stays soft, its normal. Although some are more silent than others.

If it bothers you, get it warrantied. They can put a new gearset and get you silent.

Quit accelerating so hard, and the back seat passengers stop whining so much.

/Well, that's what happens when I got people in the back seat, anyway...

It's probably your differential, give it a little time, sometimes when the gears break in a little they stop whining as much. If it gets louder or it's really unnerving, do what ManEhawke said and don't be afraid to use your warranty -- rear differential gears can be tricky things to get quiet. Mine have whined from the day I got it, but only up to about 25 mph.

Of course... you could also upgrade your exhaust -- drowning out the whine is a great way to deal with it!

No its not loud enough at all to bother me and although it the meshing sounds increases in frequency as i speed up it does not really get any louder. I only heard it the first time driving on the highway, windows up, radio off. but once i heard it my mind tunes my ears to it i find myself turning the radio off to see if i can hear it. if its normal i will just relax and tune it out. I would hate to have a new set of gears put in and those be louder.

Off road mid pipe and axel back will help mask the sound as well.

You can fix the distraction from the rear by pressing the peddle on the right.

I hear you man.

I've got this strange whining type sound sound that comes from under my hood. It's noticeable at idle but just keeps getting louder as I accelerate.

Actually between the LT headers and the Borlas I can hardly hear it sometimes though.

I agree with everyone above about your situation, because they are all far smarter than I.
