Not sure where you heard that. In the old days break in oils were usually 20W non detergent oils. Hasn't been that way in many, many years now. Your new Stang comes with the same oil that Ford recommends for the oil changes. Motorcraft 5W-20 or 5W-50 if a Boss, Shelby, or Track Pak car.

My '14 GT Track Pack will get new oil (Motorcraft 5W-50) and filter (Motorcraft FL-500S) every 3,000 miles. That's a standard I've maintained for many years.

Welcome to 2013, that standard is no longer the standard, sir. 3000 was a standard for conventional oil, but your mustang doesn't use conventional oil.

that's not the real reason these cars have 5k mile oil changes.. they simply added more oil.

From 6 quarts to 6.5 quarts in the GT500 so you think I'm able to go an additional 2k miles on a half quart of oil more? I was under the impression that conventional oil breaks down sooner than synthetic oil. If I put 8 quarts of conventional in my car, I'm still changing it a 3k.

Why change the oil? If it gets low there's a hole on the engine where you can pour more oil in.

I did my first oil change at 5k miles and every 5k since then with Ford synthetic blend. IMO if you do more than that you are hanging on to antiquated ideals and wasting money.

For me, it's a personal preference. I don't drive many miles per year. In 5 years of ownership, my '07 GT was only driven 24,000 miles. I've owned my '11 Ranger for 2 years and it only has 4,800 miles on it. Based those two, I'll at least change oil and filter annually.

Have your oil analyzed a couple times after 3k miles and see what the analysis says. That's the sure way to know how long you can/should go between changes.

As long as I can afford it, I'll stick to my original plan and will be ok without oil analysis. I'll be getting a good deal on oil changes.

Personnaly i like throwing my money out the window, so i changed mine at 500, 1000 and 1500 so far. hey, that's just who i am.

Doesn't get driven much ( 500-600 miles/summer only), so i like getting rid of the old oil comes winter before it gets stored for 5 months.
