Does anyone actually run with 87 Octane on their 5.0?
#21
I have been running 87 for low-speed around town driving and filling up on 91 for road trips and/or when I know I'll get the chance to do more spirited driving. I get no pinging or knock with the 87, however.
My MPG (with a 3.73 rear end and 5-speed manual) averages a lousy 12 in the city but a decent 24-26 highway. I have never owned a vehicle before with such a large spread between city and hwy mileage. My '06 GT with an ATX got around 16 city.
I am going to try 91 in town also to see if it boosts my city MPG, although I tend to doubt it will.
BTW, there is a gas station near me that sells 100 octane (!) gas, however it runs $6.39/gallon last I checked.

HP with 87 is 402 HP on 91+ is 412... So with more octane you get a bump in the power...

I am going to try Regular the next time I fill. I refuse to use the mid-grade with 10% ethanol. Both Regular and Premium are alcohol free out here and there is about .33 cents difference in cost. I am just curious to see what happens to the mpg, as the majority of my driving is interstate or two lanes. I admit I enter the highway on ramp at an "acceptable merge speed", and cruise at 75.

So is there any advantage to using 89 over 87?
Does the car adjust itself to it or is it just like using 93 and not getting any extra power because the car will adjust to 91?

Here in FL, the difference between Regular (87) and Premium (93) is about $ 0.20 and $ 0.25. So figuring that I usually fill up around 10-12 gallons, it will run me about $ 2 to $ 3 dollars more per tank by filling up with the Premium... I'm not driving hundreds of miles per day, and even though it is my daily driver, I love to have some fun as well. So well worth it IMO!
I just had the Steeda CAI installed on Friday... and even Gus from Steeda said that the car would run on 89 (here in FL 89 is considered mid-grade)!
I thought this car was a rocket before, but after the CAI & Tune... I usually leave the seat of my pants behind, before it can catch up later, when I stop!
See ya!
