Dealer installed security system?

Anyone have a dealer installed Ford security system on a 2011 or 2012? I just bought a 2012 convertible but it didn't come with the factory upgrade security system. It seems that the Ford accessory add-on system is basically a movement/jarring detection but wondering if anyone has experience with how good it is, or inclination toward false alarms. Thanks.

security system, alarms are like Dumbo's feather, just to make u feel better, if someone's gonna do something to your car they're gonna do it. that's what insurance is for..
besides think they turn off (or no one cares) if the car is being towed which is the only way these cars can be stolen since there's a chip in the key.

a tracking system would prob be more useful..

Stay away from the Ford Accessory system. It is not compatible with the 2011/2012 cars. You need a more modern system that can communicate over the CanBus. I had the system installed and it immediately gave me no end of grief until I pulled it out less than a month later.

What did you replace it with? And why would Ford sell a product that is not compatible? What problems did it cause? Thanks.

At this point I have not replaced it with anything. I believe Viper has a system that works if you get the CanBus module.

Ford Accessories (just like Ford Racing parts) are not made by Ford. The alarm is not compatible because it would sometimes arm itself, and it would sometimes go off when I unlocked the car. Too add to the confusion, since it doesn't talk to the car's own alarm system, the button on the key fob sets off the car's alarm instead of silencing the accessory alarm.

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the accessory alarm monitors the dome light as a sign of a break in. It also monitors the unlock command to the door locks (at the lock itself). It seems like the alarm sometimes catches the unlock before the dome light, other times the dome light before the unlock...

A high end aftermarket company quoted me an install for a viper product with motion sensor. What is the CanBus module? Thanks!

This is useful too: http://www.viper.com/P-507M/Digital-Tilt-Motion-Sensor

There are so many Viper parts/kits/etc. that you should speak to one of their experts to make sure you get the system you need.

It looks like this motion detector is for tilt, if a car is being towed. But the viper they mentioned was for inside the car movement. And can you clarify what CanBus is?

Hey guys,

The Vehicle Security System-Alarm shown on our Ford Accessories site is in fact compatible with the 2011 and 2012 Mustangs. It sounds like something went wrong during install for PTRocks, or they had the wrong kit for your vehicle (there are 2). DrDisney, I recommend you speak to your dealer about the install and pricing.

Unfortunately, a crook/crackhead albeit a good one or a poor one, can get into any vehicle. All we can do is attempt to make it difficult (the average car thief won't spend more than 10 seconds to get into a car) and have them go off to the next vehicle.

I've thought of using a starved pit bull in the passenger seat, but that's cruelty to animals, and I cannot do that (I love dogs).

Thanks Deysha for following up. I was leaning toward not adding this due to the other comments. I will definitely check with the dealer now. Thanks again.

The Ford accessory alarm system sounds like the unit I bought from Pep Boys and installed on my F150 (Bull Dog brand I believe). It had a box that was about 2 inches by two inches, and connected straight to the battery (plus ground. A five minute install. If the door was opened and the interior light came on, the alarm sounded (unless the fob was used to disable of course). It also had a motion detector that was adjustable.

It was $49.00. I'll bet the Ford accessory one is more...

So far so good. It works like it was factory installed. No false alarms. I'm really glad I went ahead with the Ford dealer installed alarm.

Most insurance companies will give discount for active anti-theft device installed as well. Just make sure to mention it to them and prove it with paperwork if it is not manufacturer installed, as the insurance companies go by the VIN number to see the options.
