Does anyone know what if any improvements were made with this 2nd edition of the S197 Mustang in terms of ride enhancement? I'm trying to compare what my '07 is like to what a similar V6 '14 would be. Aside from the engine being a lot stronger did they address any of the ride harshness or noise or anything like that? Do the '14s have revised suspension parts? I think the transmissions are the same, probably the rear ends too.

 

I'm just going out on a lim here to say the 05 - 09 s197 is the all time leader in all aspects. 10 - 14 meh. It's ok I guess.

Let's just say that the 13-14 V6 is the S550 of the 05-09 cars

 

I think the 2010/2011 MCR (mid-cycle-refresh) improved springs, dampers, brakes, sound insulation, interior materials, and more. [not including the drivetrain - as you allude to above]
I think the ride and NVH are both improved, but, to be honest, I have not driven them directly back-to-back.

 

The reason I ask is I may have a chance to buy a 14 that is almost exactly the same equipment as my 07, instead of a 15, and I was wondering if the ride is improved because as some of you know the ride quality of the 05-09 isn't the best. Granted, the IRS and changes to the 15 model will help more. I'd be interested in the 14 as a way to save some money and also the color I want is not available in the 15. I wouldn't buy just any 14 but this one looks attractive. However, if the ride is going to be very similar to mine that could change my opinion. The 07 is somewhat choppy on bumps and noisy (road noise, suspension noise on bumps, etc).

I dont recall reading about the improvements to the 10 and newer ones.

 

I own an '05 and when I first drove a '10 I was blown away by how much more refined it was. Better ride, better steeing and NVH suppression on another level.

They may have only been small tweaks between '09 and '10, but they made a massive difference.

It seems '15 has made a similar jump in terms of refinement over the '14 and the IRS has improved its manners even more.

 

The 10 GT got the 08/09 Bullitt enhancements (which were an upgrade over the 05-09 GT 4.6L) in handling and performance. Plus the 10 GT offered a Track Pack package for firmer handling. The 11+ GT's offered more handling options along those lines, plus has the 5.0.


"Allof the Bullitt elements are the base foundation of the GT," saidRandle, noting engine and chassis improvements. "We also appliedsome improvements gained from Mustang racing. We're learningconstantly and always giving that to the customer on the base car."
Improvementsinspired by the Bullitt program, for instance, include a short-throw, performance-based shifter originally launchedon the feature car.

Theredline for the V-8 is increased 250 rpm to 6,500, and revisedcalibration ensures the customer fully feels these changes.

Boththe V-6 and V-8 engines have larger exhaust tips, growing to 3 and 3½ inches, respectively, up ½ inch from the previous model. The V-8exhaust features polished tips.

"The 2010 Mustang runsgreat on regular fuel, and that is where we quote our peak numbers,but we also have a great dual-adaptive knock calibration that allowsthe 2010 Mustang to run on regular fuel as well as premium fuel, andthe system figures it out itself," said powertrain supervisorChris Roxin. "It also improves the torque of the engine in thelow- to mid-rpm range."

 

I know the 300hp V6 is a huge improvement but I was thinking more of improvements to the base model. I see they have 18" wheels so can I assume some chassis tuning was done? I'll have to drive it but the dealership is kind of far away.

 

Question is what does improved handling mean to you? I'm reading that it means a more comfortable ride.

The '15 is reputably a much smoother ride, and very much reduced road noise.

That said, out of '05+,09+, 11+ and 15, I have only driven my own - a 2014 Pony Pack v6. I can feel the bumps, but the car sticks to the ground. Even when I do something foolish, like stomp the gas from a dead stop on a turn, and forget that the road was wet - I might slither a sec before the TC corrects my mistake - but it is not like my '99 where if I did something like that, I would just be sliding sideways into the oncoming traffic.

Your best bet is to drive it to feel it. So, when you do your one and only test drive from the far-away dealer, make sure its a long drive. And make sure you drive your '07 there and back so you can compare and contrast.

Even if you want to buy it on the spot after your test drive because you want to save yourself the ride back - do a short drive in your 07 afterwards to feel the differences.

I am very happy with the ride quality of my '13 V6. I have the Pony Package which comes with 18" wheels and it rides better than our Mazda. The base model would have 17" wheels which should give a slightly better ride since there is more tire sidewall to absorb bumps.

 

That is the exact one I would be looking at. A 14 Pony. By improved ride I mean quieter (less road/bump noise) and more controlled on bumps. My 07 Pony is already a pretty good freeway cruiser. But if there's not a big difference when the going gets rough then I might re-consider a 15 or something else. Is your 14 pretty quiet from road noise?
