CDC chin spoiler finish question
CDC chin spoiler finish question
I ordered the CDC black textured chin spoiler to match the other factory trim. Looked great and it fit perfect. I was going on a road trip and was putting road wrap on the front. The wrap wouldn't stick to the chin spoiler so I grabbed rubbing alcohol to clean it thinking there was oil or something on spoiler. To my suprise the textured coating came right off. I didn't scrub it or anything, just gently wiped it. I called CDC and they said that shouldn't happen and sent me a replacement. When I got the new one I tested an area in the back and it comes right off too. I called them back and the guy I spoke too said I shouldn't be putting rubbing alcohol on it. I'm not too paint smart but if this is true then what else do I need to watch out for? Am I just being stupid and have nothing to worry about or will this thing look like crap in a few months? I want to be sure this is normal and not a defect in the painting process before I put it back on because it is a pain in the butt to take off! Thanks for the help.
I have one also and I knew it was a sprayed on paint finish . My thought was it could easily be resprayed with an aftermarket finish from Duplicolor . Did you rub the finish off while preping the the sides for the bonding tape?
I tried to respray the original one. The original paint came off so easily I had the entire spoiler stripped in about 20 minutes with just rubbing alcohol. I ran all over town looking for a matching textured coating. The closest I could find was SEM textured coating. It probably matches the other trim 95% but I want 100%. With how much I have invested in this car anything less that 100% won't work for me. On the flip side the coating I put on does not rub off. I'm not sure what you're referring too as far as prepping the sides for the tape. The tape was already on my spoiler I just had to prep the bumper with alcohol for the tape and I had no problems there.

I had the CDC installed on my GT... fit was awesome, finish, not so... I had mine painted to match the body color. In my case black cc. I believe that the CDC finish is more of a primer than an actual finish. Alcohol will definitely remove the finish. If you want a trouble free finish, then I'd advised that you paint to match your trim or body color, whichever you prefer.
Thanks for the replies. I am going to put it back on and hope the finish stays. If it doesn't I will take it in and have a body shop and fix it while it is on the car. It is too big a pain to take off because of the 3M tape. I love the look too much though to not have it on there.
I didn't get any pics and the spot I tested on the new one is so small that it wouldn't really show in a pic. It simply removed all the texture and I was left with just the smooth black plastic.

if you use a heat gun, it's easy to remove anything that 3M tape is holding, and the finish is most likely a primer used to be prepped for paint, I say paint it if you want it to look great!
