Anyone had a cat fail real early? Mines rattling BAD, not sure what caused it. Trying to get it in tomorrow to get it fixed... Hasn't thrown a code yet.

 

You running an aftermarket tune ?

 

Yes. I'm not too familiar with cat failures, will running too rich cause them to break apart? I thought an impact would do that (no dents on canister, though...). Ratios never looked too rich, either when I data logged, but who know maybe with the cold weather it's running rich.

 

Yeah I agree with you. I know poor air/fuel ratios will render a converter useless but have never heard of the guts breaking apart. Usually vibration causes this or some type of impact.

 

Of course when I took in today the noise completely disappeared...

Maybe it had warmed up enough to not make any noise...a good 1.5 hours of driving so everything was thoroughly warmed. I also returned tune to stock just before heading to the dealer, whether or not that has anything to do with it I don't know.

Might just get a new tune, anyways. Currently have a Redliners and they are apparently AWOL, and I don't particularly care for my Steeda tune (throttle still not where I like it). I like how the Redliners tune feels, but I'm worried about long term effects, if it's truly safe and all that.

I guess I'll have to see what else is out there.

 

I love my VMP tune. Justin Starkey does a good job.

 

Yeah, I hear VMP and Lund get good reviews...although I don't like that VMP charges for revisions.

 

True. I believe his first time charge for a tune is less. Maybe in the long haul it comes out in the wash?

 

I had one let loose on the inside after driving through a deep puddle. Totally blocked the exhaust and took a special mechanic to find the problem.

 

Well, for whatever reason the sound is still gone on the stock tune, even after sitting all night. Will load up the tune again this evening and see if it comes back. No idea what to think if it does, as I can't imagine a tune affecting a cat like that if it's already grenaded inside.

To clarify, the "canisters" on the H pipe are the cats, yes? I would assume so since I don't see any anywhere else, and they are between the O2 sensors.

I had a very similar issue.. well ... maybe not quite, but maybe...

My car had a very specific type rattle within a certain RPM range and it would rattle no matter what gear I was in. I ended up putting out big money for different shops to take my exhaust apart and even went as far as to have new cats installed. Issue was STILL there even after several shops told me it was my CATS. I ended up taking it to a mechanic that only works with Hondas. Turned out that the manifold welds broke on one side internally. $40 later, he fixed it for me.

I know I asked about the throttle response a while back, and was more or less told there wasn't much else to be done. I think the primary difference between the two is the steeda tune starts out pretty tame until 30% or so, then really kicks in...the other tune I like better is much more linear, and it seems like it gets to 100% before the pedal is fully to the floor... If that makes sense. I can accelerate quicker with less throttle with the other tune

I'm not trying to be a smart butt. If i were running a tune from someone no longer around, i sure to hell would be changing to someone else. So many 'good' $75 tunes around.
